That's not good as it doesn't signal confidence in the film. At first it was 1,500+, then 1,200+, and now just over 1,000.

Yeah, I'm concerned as well. It looks like SPC is somehow dumping the film. No advertising, and only 1 screen per theater. It's so quiet. Hope it can maintain a $3000 PTA this weekend, and I'm still hoping for a Yimou oscar nomination.

Finally coming to a theater near me (two actually), so I'll hopefully be seeing it next week. Plan to see Saw on Monday, In Good Company or House of Flying Daggers on Tuesday and Meet the Fockers on Wednesday.

I think it will make $3+ million over 4 days, but not much more than that. Well, at least, it'll probably overtake The Motorcycle Diaries' total.

Week 7 (Jan 14–17): $2,262,667 $1,903 $7,477,170

Not a very successful expansion, as the PTA dropped below $2000 for a 4-day weekend. It should be able to hold the theater count steady for a couple of more weeks, but looks like it will only finish with about $12M.

I expect it to quickly lose its theaters next week, and the week after that. I believe that at best it will reach 11m. 9.5m-10m is more likely IMO. It's a shame, it could have done much better.

Well, it stands at $9 million now. The major snubs at this year's Oscars for House of Flying Daggers were all pretty surprising, in my opinion. I expected at least four noms. Especially, the Best Foreign Picture snub was a shock. As of now, I don't see the movie passing $12 million.

Yeah, I can't believe it wasn't nominated for best foreign film. :???:

Especially, considering that it was by far and away the highest-grossing of all eligible foreign movies. Now the highest grossing nominee in that category is The Sea Inside with less than $0.5 million :???:

House of Flying Daggers lost 60% of its theaters this weekend and saw its gross cut in half. $11M is the ceiling for it now.

Well, it's not all that bad, it'll still end up as the 15th biggest foreign film ever in the USA and the 3rd biggest foreign film of 2004.

It finally passed $10M during the weekend. Being probably the most accessible foreign movie released last year, it didn't meet the high expectation some of us had, but it still had a very decent run, both in the U.S. and around the world.

And 6 weeks later, HOFD finally passed $11M, if the estimate holds.

As I have stated in another thread, I have seen House of Flying Daggers some days ago. I was a bit let down. I guess I'll never get into this type of movies. It was technically great with amazing art direction, cinematography and good music, but I wasn't a big fan of the story. After having seen Andy Lau's very good performance in Infernal Affairs, I was disappointed by his rather mediocre turn in this film. Zhang Ziyi was at her career-best, though. The story took some really unexpected turns, but whether that was for the good is up for discussion. I didn't like the menage á trois aspect of the movie and wish they focused more on the House of Flying Daggers group. The "dancing sequence" by Ziyi in the beginning of the movie was a visual highlight, though. However, I thought that overall, the movie didn't reach the visual brilliance of Hero, even though the story was slightly better-written. I settled for a B-.

Just wanted to state that here.

As for the movie's run, I think it was decent. I think any foreign flick that earns over $10 million in the States is quite a hit already. Hopefully Downfall will join that list soon :D
