The Motorcycle Diaries - 2 Oscar Nominations
This movie has displayed exceptional PTAs so far and has increased in every single of its weekends so far. The theatre expansion is going strong, the WoM is good and the reviws are great. This movie sure will be heard of during the awards season as well as it is a possible contender for Best Picture and Best Actor.
I am getting the feeling that it might become this year's Lost in Translation, especially box-office wise. Its weekend takes will never be big, but they will be very steady as will be the PTA. I hope the movie will expand to at least 800-900 theatres during its run.
I will track this movies box-office now as well as any awards news revolving around it.
What total gross do you predict this movie to end up with?
My prediction at the moment is $33 million.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A good drop considering it received only minmal expansion this week. The PTA is still great and I hope that it will be expanded to over 300 theatres next week.
Any predictions for the next weekend?

Weekend 6 - $991,229 - -30.7% - $9,301,385 ($3,754)
Weekend 7 - $948,895 - -4.3% - $10,646,467 ($3,540)

($3,130)
Weekend 9 - $621,808 - -16.5% - $12,733,850 ($2,668)
Weekend 10 - $657,028 - +5.7% - $13,677,171 ($2,749)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bottom line:
Focus messed up the release of this movie, in my opinion, just like it did with Shaun of the Dead. It has opened with an outstanding PTA and great reviews and the PTAs has stayed steady for the last couple of weeks. Yet up until last weekend the movie kept losing its theatres onstead of expanding. It has never even hit 300 theatres during its run. I hope that Focus will at least start expanding it again throughout the award season like it did for this weekend. A $20 million gross is still within reach if the movie will get further expansions.

Screw Focus for dumping it. I saw it in theatres and man, that was a great movie.

Great example of the studio dropping the ball on a movie....

Its potential was really shut down. It could have made so much more. Still great though.

I wonder if perhaps there might be a re-release if and when it receives any Oscar nods?

Maybe, but I don't think it will. It happened to Birth.

Hm, I have to watch this film now because I pre-judged it (apparently). My friend, as well as torrino ( ) didn't look too kindly on my judgement of it.
Let's hope it sticks around for just a bit longer.

The thing is that I doubt it'll actually receive more than 1 oscar nod (it might be snubbed completely!). They should have gone wider while the buzz was still there, not when the nominations are out and there won't be many for The Motorcycle Diaries.
This is Focus' second movie they dropped the ball on this year, the other one was Shaun of the Dead which also had much more potential. :?
@Box
Actually, I had somewhat they same thought as you (glamorizing a revolutioner like Che), but I still want to see it for quite a couple of reasons. First of all, it's getting great reviews, second of all Gael Garcia Bernal is a good actor and third of all I am usually interested in filmmakers' takes on controversial personalities.

That's not amazing, but better than nothing. Won't help the gross too much, though. The movie will top out at around $17.5 million, unfortunately.
