Re: Music Sales/Chart Thread (Billboard/Hits Daily Double)
Mamma Mia! is now less than 100,000 away from 1 million total sales in the US. What was the last movie soundtrack to do that well? Not counting High School Musical of course.

GOOOO pink, you can do it.
Mariah isnt even trying. The whole album has been a flop.
I think 2007/2008 have been the best years for UK imports in the states for, well, ever.

As good as BD is I don't think it will work very well as a single. Maybe Top 10 but no Top 5.

It's the 8th single from GGGB. That will tie her with Janet's Rhythm Nation as the album with the most singles.

Re: Music Sales/Chart Thread (Billboard/Hits Daily Double)
I think Rihanna is kind of touching on desperate now. Good Girl Gone Bad is a great CD but fuck if she doesn't know shes a single artist from releasing like 94 million songs from one CD.
Umbrella, by the way, hit initially late April early March 2007. It is now nearly 2009. Call me crazy, but no album should be stretched to 8 singles over 1.5 years.
Like usually an albums release singles window is a year max, a good single sampling is four, five TOPS and it is supported by a tour so that the time until the next album is around 2 years. Rihanna will be literally just coming off Breaking Dishes when shell be beginning promo for the next CD. That kind of constant saturation is unhealthy and will sicken the market of her.
She truly has broken through as a singles star with this CD, but her next one needs to have the same exceptional hits or Rihanna is a goner, she is only ever as good as her songs because she has no charisma or appeal as a star on her own right. If her next CD sucks, her profile will just collapse, id imagine she'd be relegated to tabloid star at that stage.

Meh. If she can find success with them, release all the singles she wants. She's probably the best representation of the current market shift.

Yeah Rihanna can do no wrong at the moment. Good on her for releasing so many singles - they've all been great and the market thinks so too. Her next one will be another success.

Except, I'm not sure she's interesting enough for the tabloids to pick up on her when she doesn't have a #1 single.

Re: Music Sales/Chart Thread (Billboard/Hits Daily Double)
technically Disturbia and Take A Bow are new material. so u can't blame her for not making material.
i think this song, is just to market GGGB into the busy xmas sales season, so i think it is very smart. And she doesn't market every single on MTV. She has an awesome video, and is accompanied by a track that gets heavy rotation on radio. that's why she's doing so well.
she might not have sold so many albums for such a good CD, but she's churned out non-stop hits. U could argue that the 2 songs that didn't make it to the top 10 were released at a bad time.
Shut Up & Drive was released when Umbrella was still at its peak. and If I Never See Your Face Again was more or less a Maroon 5 single, because Take A Bow was released in April and Disturbia leaked in late-May.
I thought it was evident she was a singles artist after Unfaithful. she released 3 albums in the space of 24 months.

Re: Music Sales/Chart Thread (Billboard/Hits Daily Double)
She is very current. And as long as she stays relevant to todays market, she's gold. But Micheal is right and I've been worrying about this for a long time with her, she is over saturating herself soooo much in the industry right now. It's not like its killing her career now, hell shes killing it with her singles but if she wants her next album to be even bigger she should take a break.

i think she is. she isn't in the studio yet for her next album. she's still chugging along with GGGB. she's still got concerts planned for the rest of the year.
So I don't think we will see a new album in 12 months.

Re: Music Sales/Chart Thread (Billboard/Hits Daily Double)
Rihanna might be overexposed at this point, but its only because many other music companies and artists have not yet realized how to be successful in today's music market. Album sales overall more or less are terrible, so now the onus is on artists to make more money from single to single sales, as well as from concerts. Rihanna is getting sales from ringtones, digital sales, advertising, etc. She's getting money out of concerts. The music industry will be pushing out one hit wonders and those that don't tour. Album sales are down, so artists need to get more money out of every single, and tour more. Then there's the merchandising. Rihanna with her own line of umbrellas? On top of that, video games are opening up another revenue stream. Right now its mostly rock songs, but more and more I see alot more songs looking at Guitar Hero and Rock Band as revenue streams. Once Youtube figures out a better revenue streaming system, more money will be pulled out from videos as well. I think 20 years from now, as bad as her singing might be at times (ex. Take A Bow, Unfaithful), she will have a legacy for how her success came about and was handled in the digital age.

Re: Music Sales/Chart Thread (Billboard/Hits Daily Double)
I have to say Rihanna probably hasnt come off too bad considering how saturated she is. I mean, Beyonce was getting huge shit by her third single from B-Day for being too over saturated. I think Rihanna's transition into starting movies etc is a bad move for her career, because shes built goodwill from being a pop star and never trying to be more like Justin etc. Those people become disassociated from what people want to see from them as artists.
