They should retire songs like TRL. 50 weeks and you are done.

The song is that catchy but it has been on and off Top 10 too frequently and has mostly been in the bottom 5.

Does that mean it technically won't debut at #1?

Interesting. I'm sure it's happened before, probably many times since streaming began, but seems like something label companies and such would want to avoid happening, so they could claim records for #1 debut songs/artists and such.

The 5 hours was cause they released it midnight UK time. Also previous some songs would debut just based on radio play since they counted radio through Sunday but I believe that has changed recently

I wish Coldplay had held off My Universe until the album release. How far would the BTS lunatics have gone to defeat Adele? :funny:

TRL?
Total Request Live was the hottest countdown show on MTV in the late 90s/early 2000s. It was a daily show, and once you hit 65 days then your song was retired and sent to the vault. It was big enough that popular artists would wait until their videos were retired before they released new singles.

Carson Daly was the original host, but it also produced minor celebs like Hilarie Burton and La La. Check it out, yo.

Definitely watched TRL a good bit after middle school. :P

They also had artists live in the studio to perform their song (current single) that was on the countdown versus playing the video that day pretty often. A lot of videos (most? at least for the big stars at the time) would debut on TRL, too, I believe.

Bad Habits is going to cheat its way to number one as Sheeran decided to conveniently ship the physical singles this week :whaa:

Really hope Adele stays ahead of well, Stay, for the next 2 weeks. Album release should be enough tio boost it back to number 1 if it falls off.

Good for Heat Waves!

Travis Scott released a new song called Escape Plan. Normally that'd be a #1 debut, but now it might be a bit too topical.

New Bruno Mars song is taking off. Maybe it could hit number one if it wasn't getting killed by Mariah and Christmas coming soon.
