Post subject:  Jim's NCAA Football Top 25 Rankings Week 10

I don't like having rankings before week 4 in any sport because I feel we don't know enough about the teams. Since Levy beat me to NFL. Here's my weekly NCAA Top 25 Thread

1. USC
The team is sick. Simple as that. They have a stable of running backs that are some of the best in the nation and with Sanchez continuing to do enough, the offense looks just as dangerous as when Leinart was the leader. They go to Oregon State this weekend but I don't expect an upset.

2. Georgia
Sure the team didn't look great against SC and Arizona State but with Moreno and Stafford leading a high powered offense its hard to argue against them. There defense is finally starting to play after looking a bit iffy after the first two weeks. They play Alabama at home who looked just unbelievable against my Hogs this past week.

3. Oklahoma
Bradford is the second best QB behind Chase Daniels right now. They haven't played any great teams yet but with TCU coming it should be a reality check on just how good Oklahoma really is.

4. LSU
I love Les Miles. The dude does not give a fuck and will do whatever he has to to win the game. Coming from behind to beat Auburn really showed how good this team is even after losing so many key players the past few years. It also looks like they found their QB of the future in Lee. Mississippi State gets to be their next victim.

5. Florida
I hate Florida, I hate having them this high but you can't argue with results. They've completely stomped Miami, Hawaii, and Tennessee and their defense, which many felt was going to be their weakest part have looked fantastic. Tebow has started a little slow but with a more complete offense around him, that is to be expected. Ol Miss is headed to the swamp. Shouldn't be pretty.

6. Missouri
Chase Daniels is a stud. He has exceeded every expectation so far this year and is the early front runner for the Heisman. They won a barn burner their first week against a decent Illinois team and haven't played anyone since. Going to Nebraska should show if this team and Chase Daniels can make a legit run this year.

7. Alabama
I got to watch first hand just how good this team is this past week. Their running game is simple amazing and the offensive line opens up holes that I could have run through. Parker Wilson is a good enough QB to manage the game. They simply embarrassed Clemson in week one and now travel to Georgia. I picked Bama as a sleeper team in the SEC this year so we shall see.

8. Texas
It's hard to have a team ranked this high when they simply haven't played anyone. They're defense looks great and Colt McCoy is a gamer but their running game worries me. When you have 3 games against a bunch of bitch schools and you don't have a running back at over 200 yards, then it makes me a bit nervous. Arkansas travels to Texas this week and I will be in the corner crying myself to sleep as I watch my Hogs get embarrassed yet again.

9. Wisconsin
The Big Ten is pathetic. Wisconsin barely beat Fresno State in what was just a horrendous game to watch. There defense is as good as ever but their offense worries me. I'm not sold on their QB Evridge yet. They travel to the Big House next to play a very average Michigan team.

10. Texas Tech
Their offense as always is unbelievable and as usual, I'm not sold on their defense who let up 24 to East Washington in week one. Harrell should continue to put up big numbers but can TT continue to put them up against Big 12 opponents. Kansas State should be a good indicator.

11. BYU
Never thought I would have them this high but their huge win against UCLA a few weeks back really impressed me. These kids can throw the damn ball and have a run game that compliments it perfectly. Can they keep this going, sure is possible with only 2 ranked teams on their schedule. (TCU and Utah)

12. Penn State
Simply an unbelievable running game. Royster has nearly 400 yards in 4 games but the amazing part is his 8.1 average. Fantastic. Their defense continues to be as hard nosed as ever. Illinois comes a knocking this weekend in what should be a fantastic game to watch.

13. South Florida
They beat my Jayhawks 2 weeks back in what was one of the best games will see all year. Grothe continues to be one of the most underrated QB's this year. The road seems open for them to storm through the very weak Big East. They go on the road this week to NC State in what could be a trap game.

14. Ohio State
They lost a tough game against USC 2 weeks back and then decided to make the QB switch to Pryor. The team didn't look that great this past week against Troy and everyone is wondering when Wells is finally coming back. If they want to compete they need him, simple as that. Minnesota comes to the horseshoe this week playing better then they have in years.

15. Auburn
It's hard to drop a team so far when they lose to LSU, but they should have won the game. They played very solid football but the defense just couldn't make that last stand. Their offense has still had trouble getting started and I'm starting to wonder if it ever will get going. They face a Tennessee team that is very hard to figure out.

16. Wake Forest
Sooner or later an ACC team had to show up I guess. The conference isn't that good but Wake seems to be the team to beat. They beat FSU in what had to be one of the worst games to watch. However, they also beat an SEC Ol Miss and a Big 12 Baylor. So they seem to be able to beat other conferences, even they are the bottom feeders of the conference. They have no running game to speak of and face Clemson in 2 weeks.

17. Kansas
Lost a tough one to USF 2 weeks ago but came back and easily beat Sam Houston State. Reesing and the defense look to be top notch like last year but the running game worries me, its been no existent for most of the season. Big 12 season starts for them in 2 weeks and should show if they are one hit wonders or a team that can finally compete on a regular basis.

18. Clemson
Lost to Bama first week but have since been unstoppable. 2 running backs with over 200 hundred years have helped get the offense going since QB Harper has been in a bit of a slump compared to last year. They play a pretty decent Maryland team this week and should be a sign of which way the season is headed for them

19. Utah
Never thought I'd have this team in my top 25 at the beginning of the season but with such a high powered offense that torched Michigan, they are looking like a dangerous team. QB Johnson has nearly a 1,000 yards already and when looking at the schedule it seems possible they could make a run. The only ranked teams they play are TCU and BYU. Both games should be tough ones.

20. Vanderbilt
That's right, this team is in my top 20. They are 4-0 and 2-0 in the SEC beating South Carolina and Ol Miss. They don't have the most high powered passing game but they have a great running back and a dual threat QB that can out run most players on the field. They play Auburn in 2 weeks and it should be a sign if Vandy is a real team or not this year.

21. Boise State
The Broncos are back. They won a shoot out at Oregon and they're defense looks pretty tough. They have a QB that doesn't make many mistakes but their offense line is a bit weak it appears.
They play one ranked team this season, Fresno State, and it's not until the last game of the year. Could we see them in a BCS bowl game again? It's possible.

22. Oregon
Losing to the Broncos was tough but they have beaten two decent teams before that in Purdue and Washington. They have an unbelievable running attack of Blount and Johnson, both over 300 yards already. The main question mark though is their QB position. Every year the Oregon starter gets hurt, the back up gets hurt, and the water boy gets hurt. Don't know how long they can hold on without a consistent guy taking the snaps.

23. ECU
Yeah Yeah, they lost an awful game to NC State. But it's tough to fault a team that has also beaten West Virginia and Va Tech. They don't play another ranked team the rest of the season, and could make a run. They have a smart QB but what worries me the most is their complete lack of a run game. Also, they're defense isn't very strong which will come to haunt them.

24. Illinois
I'm not sold on this team right now. They lost a close one to Missouri but then nearly blew a game to Louisiana-Lafayette. They're running game is good but Juice Williams still throws too many picks and takes too many sacks. There defense is nothing to write home about either. They face Penn State this weekend. Let's see if they are for real.

25. Oklahoma State
Surprise #25 I'm sure but this team has too things I love about them. A strong defense that made Washington State look like kids and a running back tandem of Kendall Hunter and Keith Toston. These 2 have totaled over 700 yards rushing with a 9.3 average. They look dirty to say the least. They're schedule will be the death of them though, having to face Missouri, Texas, Texas Tech, and Oklahoma.

Just Missing the Cut
TCU, Fresno State, Nebraska

On USC, you didn't even have to mention their great defense; they are ranked #1 just based on offense.

Georgia better step it up this week to stay at #2.

They're offense was shut down except for 3 drives.

And even on those 3 drives, their o-line got DOMINATED.

I don't think that it was that bad. If they would have gone the entire season totally smashing other opponents and then lost on the last game of the season to an unranked team, then maybe. Nonetheless, I think you have to look at the two opponents that USC faced.

Virginia - Perhaps Virginia is just really bad. In their game against Duke, Duke is actually favored. U.Va. is a 7-point underdog to Duke, which was 1-11 last season, one of three consecutive years in which the Blue Devils suffered at least 10 losses. Those games are normally really lopsided in the favor of Virginia. They have also been outscored 97-33 in the past 3 games. We normally think of Virginia as a good/decent team, but with the quarterback issues this season the team really has some problems.

Ohio State - They were without their main offensive weapon in Beanie Wells and also were trying to split time between an underperforming quaterback and a physical phenom that is learning the ropes.

Thus, the USC defense was thought to be one of the best Pete C. had ever coached even though they really hadn't been tested. The PAC-10 surely is having a bad year!

WEEK 5

1. Alabama (+6)
I said last week that they could upset Georgia. They' didn't just upset them, they pounded and embarrassed the team. The Bama offense is simply unstoppable right now. Coffee can run on anybody and Wilson continues to manage the game perfectly. The defense looked good allowing most of their points in garbage time and they completely stopped Moreno. They look good.

2. Oklahoma (+1)
They did everything right. Bradford looked great against TCU throwing over 400 yards and 4 touchdowns. Defense dominated the usually high powered TCU offense. Easy week for them.

3. LSU (+1)
No SEC game is easy and Mississippi State tried to make it a game but just couldn't keep up with them. Lee managed the game but the key to the office is Scott. He has over 500 yards rushing with over a 7.0 per carry average. Defense needs to toughen up though for their game against Florida

4. Missouri (+2)
Nice easy bye week for them. Have a tough game against Nebraska this week.

5. Texas (+3)
They pounded an awful Arkansas team. Colt McCoy is making a Heisman case this year as he continues to shred inferior defenses. They're defense has been great. I'm still worried about their running game. McCoy should not be your leading rusher. On a different note, in 3 of their 4 games, they've won 52-10. Odd.

6. Penn State (+6)
Punished a decent Illinois team with their unbelievable running back tandem. They put up 38 points and that was their lowest outing this year. Penn State's defense continues to play well and they look like the best team in the weak Big 11.

7. Texas Tech (+3)
Never thought I'd have this team in the top 10 but with so many upsets, it happens. Had a bye and play Kansas State next week. Should be a good judgment game.

8. BYU (+3)
Had a bye. Doesn't play a ranked team until the last week of the season. BCS game here they come

9. Georgia (-7)
Losing to Alabama is ok, going through the SEC undefeated is tough and I don't count this team out. However, they were completely embarrassed. For a team that is supposed to be a national championship contender, you have to show up and they didn't. Moreno got nothing and Stafford needs to do more.

10. South Florida (+3)
Embarrassed NC State. Easily still the front runner for the Big East with Grothe continuing to play well. Still need to get their run game going.

11. USC (-10)
Forget everything I said last week. Their offense was simply inept. They had no run game to speak of going 3 and out constantly. Sanchez played well but he needs to be the leader of this team. Defense has some issues as well being completely dominated on the frontline.

12. Auburn (+3)
They're defense is dominate, easily manhandling Tennessee. They still have many problems with their offense though. Todd is not looking like the answer at QB and they face a difficult Vandy team with a tough defense.

13. Florida (-8)
Have people finally figured out how to play Tebow? He has not been the same QB we saw last year and his arm still isn't that great. They have no rushing game to speak of and they're defense looked weak. Of course they play Arkansas next week, so that should help them.

14. Ohio State (Even)
Well they look like they are back on track after not looking good last week against Troy. Their defense looks strong but I still disagree with the decision of having Pryor as the featured QB. Play Wisconsin next week.

15. Kansas (+2)
Had a bye. Start big 12 season next week with Iowa State

16. Utah (+3)
They played Weber State. Offense looked great but the defense looked rather weak. Play Oregon State next week, should show if the team is for real or not.

17. Boise State (+4)
Another team with a bye week. They don't play a ranked team until the last week against Fresno State.

18. Vanderbilt (+2)
Another team with a bye week. Play Auburn next week. Should show if they can actually play.

19. Wisconsin (-10)
Blew a 19-0 lead to Michigan. They're offense continues to look weak and they're usually tough defense was completely dominated in the second half. They should be embarrassed after this game. If they don't right the ship this is the type of game that can derail a season.

20. Oregon (+2)
That's how you come back from a loss. They completely stroked Washington State. They're running game looks great and they may have found a steady QB if he doesn't get hurt.

21. Oklahoma State (+4)
They're offense looks just plain dangerous. Easily defeated Troy and still have one of the best running backs in the nation with Hunter. Start off their Big 12 season next week against an inconsistent A&M team

22. Virginia Tech (N/A)
Didn't think I'd see this team in my top 25 this early after the ECU loss but they beat a very solid Nebraska team. They're offense still worries me but if they're defense can keep playing well they might be able to win the awful ACC.

23. UCONN (N/A)
Beat a Louisville team that I thought was better than how they looked this past week. They have no QB which really worries me but they're running game with Brown is unbelievable. He has 906 yards with over a 6.0 average. They're defense doesn't look the hottest and play a pretty good North Carolina team next week.

24. Maryland (N/A)
Beating a ranked opponent even one that I thought was overrated earns props from me. And Maryland gets the props. They looked and played very well. They're defense still worries me though.

25. Fresno State (N/A)
They beat a bad UCLA team barely. They've lost to a Wisconsin team that doesn't look as well as we thought but looking at the schedule, they play Boise State their last week, they're only ranked opponent.

Dropping Out
Wake Forest, Clemson, ECU, Illinois

Just Missing the Cut
Northwestern, Michigan State, Wake Forest

I would love to see an Alabama vs. Oklahoma national championship game, but it's way too early to tell what will happen the rest of the season. Kirk H. of ESPN Gameday had USC vs. Florida in the national championship game. Although it seems now that neither would make it, losses in the beginning of the season are not as bad as losses late in the season. Maybe they'll make it back, but it'll be hard for USC.

WEEK 6

1. Oklahoma (+1)
Sam Bradford is having one amazing season, that's for sure. The kid is the real deal and has a legit shot at the Heisman this year. They have a very solid run game, the defense needs to toughen up a little though with Texas coming to town next week for the Red River Shoot Out.

2. Alabama (-1)
Yeah they won, yeah Kentucky is a pretty solid team, but Bama just did not look that great yesterday. Every SEC game can be an upset so Saban needs to get his players going again. Coffee is a beast though. Kid can fucking run.

3. Missouri (+1)
Chase Daniels is the Heisman front runner right now and I would even go as far to say its his to lose. They completely embarrassed a pretty solid Nebraska team and their defense is finally starting to play. They play a very good OK State team next week.

4. LSU (-1)
They had a bye. Go to the Swamp next week.

5.Texas (Even)
Easily beat Colorado but didn't have that great of a game. McCoy made a few mistakes that he can't do next week and their lack of run game still worries me. Still got a top notch defense and they'll need it when they go against the Sooners.

6. Penn State (Even)
Defense completely shut down a pretty high powered Purdue offense and offense is still looking pretty good. They go to Wisconsin next week. Is Penn State the best in the Big 11?

7. Texas Tech (Even)
Most powerful offense in the NCAA. Harrell has over 2,000 yards passing already and will probably be in the Heisman talk for the rest of the year. Punished a decent K State team. Nebraska comes to town next week.

8. USC (+3)
It looked like another upset after the first quarter. Then the USC offense decided to come out finally. Sanchez finally showed the killer spirit that Lienart and Palmer had and they're defense played great in the second half. Still have a shot at the title game.

9. Georgia (Even)
Had a bye week. Play Tennessee next week. Not out of the title run yet.

10. Florida (+3)
I got to be in the stands for their game against my Hogs. I really don't know what to say about them. Tebow looked incredibly shaky but their run game was a beast. Defense looked great too. LSU comes to the swamp next week. Let's see if they can play against a real team.

11. Ohio State (+3)
Yeah Yeah they barely won but Wisconsin is a pretty good team. Wells is playing great after the injury but I still don't like the move to Pryor at QB. I still think he should be the secondary QB that comes in every once in awhile.

12. Vanderbilt (+6)
With a back up QB they come from a 13-0 deficit to beat Auburn. Their defense may be undersized but they're quick and aggressive and Adams QB'd great. They go to Mississippi State next week. Can the run continue?

13. BYU (-5)
But they won, how could I drop them 5? Because they don't play anybody. I'll see if this team is for real when they play TCU in 2 weeks.

14. Kansas (+1)
Reesing is the real deal. He carried that team in the second half and kept the season alive for them. If they want to be an upper echelon team you have to win these games easily. Play Colorado which could be another trap game for them.

15. Oklahoma State (+6)
This offense is good. 4th straight game with over 50 points. Robinson is looking like a real QB and Hunter continues to be one of the better running backs in the league. They go to Missouri next week in what should be a shoot out.

16. Utah (Even)
Needed a last second field goal but a win is a win and considering it came against Oregon St. a team that was riding high after their upset, it's a good win. They're the only non-BCS team I'm really sold on.

17. Boise State (Even)
Doesn't play a ranked team this season. Easiest road out of any of the Non-BCS teams.

18. Virginia Tech (+4)
Should have beaten Western Kentucky by more but a win is a win. Looks like they got their season back on track after the early upset to ECU. Could be the best ACC team. That's not saying much though.

19. Aubun (-7)
They had no business losing that game. Scored on their first two drives. The offense looked like it finally righted itself and then the second half happened. They have a QB problem and that's not good when trying to run the spread. Luckily for them Arkansas comes to town next week.

20. North Carolina (N/A)
Wow. I knew Butch Davis was a good coach but I did not think he would have them playing this well this early. It helps that they play in the awful ACC, a pretty good Notre Dame comes to town next week, should show if they're actually any good.

21. Michigan State (N/A)
Never thought I'd have these guys ranked but they can play. Ringer is in the hunt for the Heisman and they're a hard nosed defense that likes to hit. They go to Northwestern next week. Should be exciting.

22. South Florida (-12)
Losing to Pitt is inexcusable. The offense did not look very good with Grothe having his worst game of the season. Lets see if they can get their shit together, they don't play another ranked team.

23. Wake Forest (N/A)
Having a bye and with a lot of teams at the bottom losing helps Wake get back into the mix. They still have a shot at the weak ACC title. Clemson comes to town next week.

24. Pittsburgh (N/A)
Looks like they righted their ship after the embarrassing game against Bowling Green. The Big East is wide open and they don't play another ranked team this year.

25. Tulsa (N/A)
Suprise! I love this team. They have tons of offense and absolutely no defense. They're tons of fun to watch and Johnson is having a great season throwing the ball with 23 touchdowns. They play one BCS team, Arkansas which barely counts as a team, so the road is open for them to make a run. Gus Malzahn is a crazy Offensive Coordinator to say the least.

Dropping Out
Wisconsin, Oregon, UCONN, Maryland, Fresno State

Ball State, California, Illinois, Northwestern
