NHL 2008-2009 Fantasy League and Pick'Em

The NHL season starts on October 4th, and so it's once again time for the annual WOKJ NHL Fantasy League! Last year's results:

1. Munky Wings 2496.20 -3.2000000000003 3 -
2. Shack the Ripper 2183.10 5 4 -
3. Angry Beavers 2178.40 41.5 5 -
4. trix are for kids 2120.30 1 1 -
5. jmart007 1961.30 11.1 2

Chip was quite a surprising winner, as after his picks of numerous injured players like Scott Neidermayer during the draft, trixster remarked "Well, we all know who lost: Chip". For shame trixster!

I've made a few changes this year:

- You'll now pick 25 players: 5 Centers, 5 Left Wingers, 5 Right Wingers, 7 Defensemen, and 3 Goalies. This will introduce a higher level of skill into the drafting, as you'll be digging into many of the lesser known players.

- You can make roster changes, but only once a week on Sundays. This will prevent players getting a leg up on their competition simply by updating their rosters every day, but will allow players to still survive through a major injury. When you drop a player, he is immediately open to the market on that Sunday.

Here is the scoring system:

Goals - 3 points
Assists - 2 points
+/- - 1 point
Powerplay Goal - 2 points (plus the points for the regular goal, so 5 in total, same for the rest of the extra categories)
Powerplay Assist - 1 point
Shorthanded Goal - 3 points
Shorthanded Assist - 2 points
Game Winning Goal - 3 points

Goalies:
Win - 5 points
Goals Against - -3 points
Saves - .3 points
Shutout - 5 points (10 total)

I've adjusted the stats for the Goalies, last year the best scoring goalies didn't score as many points as the top forwards, that was my mistake. This year the wins and shutouts will have a slighter higher score, and while the Goals Against/Saves ratio is the same, now they have three times as much an effect.

Now this is where I have a question for you guys: If you want, we can run the game the same way as last year, where the points race is just cumulative throughout the year. OR, we can use the head to head system. Unfortunately we can't do both at the same time on yahoo, but I can keep track of the head to head battle system here. That's what I would be most supportive of, because last year, I remember once it got to a few months in just watching the back and forth cumulative totals got a bit dull. This way, we'd have two seperate winners, the champ of the cumulative total and the winner of the head to head.

Now on top of this, I've also decided to run a seperate Saturday Night Pick'Em game. Saturday Nights in hockey are almost as busy as Sundays in football, so it'd make sense to have a similarly run pick'em game during that time. The results and players if they wish would be totally different from the fantasy game, but I'd probably do them both in the same thread. Like the NFL game, all you do is copy the list of games on that night, bold your winners, and see your results the day after. Once again, this will keep the activity and excitement around the thread and game week to week.

I've set the draft for Sunday, September 28th, at 3:00 ET. If anyone has a problem with that date, let us know and maybe we can find one more accomodating. You can rank your player choices before the draft, in that case if you miss it, the picks will made for you. Last year everyone showed up, which was nice, but it's not a big deal if you don't come.

Wev. Chip's still a moron. He just got lucky.

That works. Though I doubt we're gonna have more than like four players, so I don't know if that'll work too well.

Yeah, that works for me.

You can rank your players and they'll pick it for you

I'll probably end up postponing the draft if we don't get more players by that time, though

Alright, so MikeQ. has apparantley signed up, along with me and trixster. With Chip and MovieGeek that'll make five, which is the number we had last year, though hopefully some of the other PMs I sent out bear fruit too. I think that rsmyth89 guy would join, probably Jmart007.

Looks like forgetting about the draft my work out for me this year. To be honest it won't hurt my overall standing this year compared to last. I really had/have no idea what the hell I was/am doing. I don't have a Bruin on my team though and that bugs me.

But with that in mind I'm in FIRST PLACE!!! It'll be short lived but at least I can say I was in first at one point during the game.

Somehow I picked an entire roster made up of players not playing this opening weekend. So that's why I'm in last with zero points.

I'll make up ground, though. You'll see.

Ok, the head to head match-ups are gonna start tomorrow. They'll run from Sunday to Saturday weekly, to fit in with the ability to change your rosters on Sundays. Having 5 players makes it kind of a bitch, but here's how I think I'll do it. 2 of the matchups week to week will be the regular head to head, where the most points is the victor. The leftover player will go against the field, that is the average of everyone else's points.

First week's matchups:
trixster vs Jmart
MovieGeek vs MikeQ.

Shack vs the field

Post subject:  Re: NHL Fantasy League Week 1 - Matchups revealed

I totally forgot to mention, here were your starting scores for the matchup started on Sunday:

Jmart - 157.8
trix - 113.7

Flying V's - 131.9
Mike - 80.1

Shack - 73.9

These is the matchup update post Monday:

Jmart - 23 (180.8 total)
trix - 53 (166.7 total)

Angry Beavers - 19.2 (99.3 total)
Flying V's - 41.5 (173.4 total)

David Stern - 27.8 (101.7 total)
The field - 34.2

Thus again the overall scores:

1. Jmart - 180.8
2. Flying V's - 173.4
3. trix - 166.7
4. David Stern - 101.7
5. Angry Beavers - 99.3

So far a pretty big turnaround from last year. But it's early yet.

Btw, the Rangers have the top three scoring players in the league right now. Henrik Lundquist (33.2), Brandon Dubinsky (28.0), and Aaron Voros (???) (26.0). : )

This week's matchups

Angry Beavers vs trix
David Stern vs JMart

The Flying Vs vs the field

Made a little mistake with the scheduling, this will be the second time Jmart and I have played. It shouldn't matter in the end though, the way I envision it is that each person will have a go against the field three times, and in those three times the matchups of the remaining four will be different. For example, here are the matchups for the three times Flying V's faces the field:

Angry Beavers vs trix
David Stern vs JMart

David Stern vs trix
Angry Beavers vs JMart

Angry Beavers vs David Stern
trix vs JMart

Thus, just about every combination should be exhausted by the end.
