No. Drugs are the difference between running 10.1 a year ago and 9.6 today... Donovan Bailey had a 9.84 in 1996. And the track at beijing is also supposedly made to help with speed/break records; but who knows if that too is a cover for the drugs. I was talking about the performance jump of Bolt...

From 1968 to 1990 the world record improved 0.05 seconds. From 1990 to 2008 the world record improved 0.23 seconds with the current record holder jogging. Not exactly a stable progression. And oddly enough the jump occured right around the time of the doping boom

Re: Official Summer Olympics 2008 Thread
A great night of TV. A very exciting final for beach volleyball. Chinese women kept close, but U.S. definitely deserves to win. Also happy to see some live (or at least close to live for us west coast people) coverage on 20km walk, open water swimming, and even diving (where they used to only show taped round from the day before).
Didn't know that Wang Chen is representing U.S. now in table tennis. She was great in her peak and is still doing pretty good.

Several show jumping horses are out now for doping, Brazil, Germany, Ireland and Norway. Maybe they trained in Jamaica.

You're right! This whole steroid boom must have started in 1912!!! Right around when the Titanic was built/set sail!!!

Re: Official Summer Olympics 2008 Thread
Whatever dude. It's not her fault. Yeah, it sucks that China prompted her into this position, but it would really suck if they took her medal away. She's fucking incredible and very obviously the best in the world on the uneven bars.
The age min shouldn't exist anyways (I know...that's sort of besides the point). Nadia Comaneci was like 14 when she won her first gold. And also, gymnastics has SUCH a high tole on the body that most careers are cut short around the age of 20 earlier, giving gymnasts very little time to shine...age limit should be cut back down to 14 at the very least.
But yeah...it's pathetic how desperate China (and by China I mean the government) is.

After a slow start, Canada is actually doing great! 3 Gold, and 15 medals total! Better than Athens. Peace, Mike

Peace, Mike Yeah, I didn't realize that we were on track to do better than previous years. But still, we're so far below what our potential is. I mean, if Australia with its 20m people can compete with the big guns, why can't we with more than 1.5 times the population? Mind you, I ultimately don't care about the Olympics, but still...

LIAR http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/He_KexinI do feel bad for the girls, but if they are under 16, and they bloody look under 12, then that means the Chinese officials lied, and if so, the gold medals should be taken away. But then, so many people lie...

Three huge upsets for the Americans I wouldn't call the relays upsets since nobody really upset the Americans; they screwed it up themselves by dropping the baton. Softball is the huge one, although I don't like the format where two teams could meet three times and only the last one counts. In any other sports, at most you get to play once in the group stage and once in the elimination round.

Heads better roll in the leadership of the US track and field team. That is just stupid given all the advantages they have.
Legitimate upsets like softball don't bother me. They won fair and square.

Re: Official Summer Olympics 2008 Thread
You can still call it an upset if a team screws up, but it is a bit off the more usual meaning.
At any rate, it was just terrible. The US track team should be doing better. Much better.
