Re: The Tennis Thread - Australian Open '08
Womens Quarterfinals
Justine Henin [1] vs. Maria Sharapova [5] Jelena Jankovic [3] vs. Serena Williams [7] ----------------------------------------- Venus Williams [8] vs. Ana Ivanovic [4] Daniela Hantuchova [9] vs. Agnieszka Radwanska [29]
I wonder if Henin v Sharapova will be at night tomorrow.

Do Hantuchova and Radwanska really have to play each other The other 6 are like the women's gauntlet killing each other, and they're just... eh. Hantuchova will have an embarrasingly high seed next major.

Jelena Jankovic [3] d. Serena Williams [7] 6-3 6-4
That was a bit of a surprise, even given Jelena's higher seeding.

Sharapova's been a total monster this tourney. If she keeps healthy, this could be the year she starts dominating the women's side.

I've never got the Maria fascination. She doesn't do it for me. Not like Ana.
And wow does Djokovic look good. He just bagelled Ferrer(seed 5) in the first set and it looked like he was barely trying. If he plays like this, I think he has a real shot to beat the Fedmeister. Right now men's tennis is really the top 3- GIANT GAP -everyone else.

Re: The Tennis Thread - Australian Open '08
That was as tense a straight sets win as you can get, at least at the end. If Djokovic would've lost the 3rd set, I think he would've been beat, he was exhausted and Ferrer(who's statistically the best retourner) was starting to rape his serve and looking like a jackrabbit. He should've came back and won that 3rd set, he just hit some really dumb errors at the end.

I've always had a soft spot for Dementieva Is it wrong that I determine who to root for on the woman's side by who I find more attractive? That Mauresmo vs Kuznetsova match last year was real tough to find someone to root for.

Re: The Tennis Thread - Australian Open '08
Overall I think Ana's my favourite. Whenever I think of Daniela I get an image of a few Wimbledon's ago where she was very, very skinny and unhealthy. I keep on expecting her to break down crying when things don't go her way. But good on her for getting to her first semi, I think she has a better chance of making the final than Jelena who is facing a very impressive Sharapova. Re: The Tennis Thread - Australian Open '08
The Blake V Federer match was something special. Some superb tennis was played - especially in the 2nd set. Blake was extremely impressive I thought - despite his straight sets loss. Couldnt believe he broke Fed that many times after Fed broke him. Good effort. Now Fed v Dok should be a good one. I wouldnt be surprised if Dok beats him. Though would love to see a Federer V Nadal final. This has to be Nadal's best chance in a long time.

Re: The Tennis Thread - Australian Open '08
Only problem with Djok is his fitness, again he was dead tired near the end of a straight sets victory against Ferrer, and he wasn't running very hard either, the game was played in Djok's power style and short points over Ferrer's running one. I don't know if he can handle a 5 set match against Fed or Nadal.

Re: The Tennis Thread - Australian Open '08
If Federer plays the way he did against Blake, I'm not sure I like his chances against Djokovic, who has been looking quite good. At least with this win Federer secures the number 1 ranking for another week, as Nadal can no longer pass him after the AO.

Re: The Tennis Thread - Australian Open '08
Why is Federer always facing the #3 seed in the semi finals?
Shouldn't the #4 seed be on his side? One big set up is what it is, to give Nadal an easier chance to make it to the finals.

Shouldn't the #4 seed be on his side? One big set up is what it is, to give Nadal an easier chance to make it to the finals. It's not strictly a S-curve. First they make sure 1 and 2 are on the opposite side, then they draw 3 and 4, one for each side, then draw No. 5 to 8, 2 on each side, and 9-16, etc. So potentially you could have 1, 3, 5, 9, 17 all on the same half of the bracket.
