Either the Steelers are better than I thought they were, or the Dolphins are far worse.
I think the Dolphins are much worse than I expected from Saban.

I don't get why you guys are freaking out...
The 'Fins didn't look that bad. Hell, they were leading for most of the third quarter, and the game was really close until the final minutes of the fourth. Everyone knew that Pitt's defense was still going to be rock solid, and they showed up and played a great game. Big deal.
History has shown time and time again that opening week ends up reflecting almost nothing accurately for the reast of the season.

it was pretty much just daunte culpepper himself (and saban not throwing the challenge flag quick enough on the Miller TD) that cost miami that game. the dolphins had every opportunity to win in the 4th quarter

Saban is an IDIOT.
If Miami doesn't make the playoffs because of a 1-game difference... that may go down as one of the worst blunders I've ever seen.
You don't hesitate to throw a challenge out like that... ugh.
But I'm glad Pitt won... because that makes me right... I like being right

WELL. Pittsburgh would have been on the 4 yard line. I know a touchdown from the 4 yard line isn't neccessarily a given, but Im going to go out on a limb and say that, even if Saban had made it more forcefully known that he wanted to challenge, Miami would STILL HAVE LOST the game.

Yeah, but I wouldnt go as far to say that it cost them the game.
It would be different if video showed that the Tight End stepped out of bounds at the 50, or something. That'd be a pretty devastating non-challenge right there.

I could care less about the challenge mistake. Saban is a fool for the way he handled that challenge, but if it was me, I wouldn't have even bothered challenging. This is why the College challenge system is far superior.
Anyways, the problems for Miami are:
!) Cullpepper looked bad. He was constantly throwing behind recievers, throwing into double coverage, throwing at receivers feet, and making poor decisions. He looked anxious in the pocket, and despite losing weight, he looked slugish and slow. He appears to have the scrambling ability of Peyton Manning, except I don't think Cullpepper can roll out like Manning can. His knee is obviously still a problem.
!) Miami's Defense looked bad. The game of football has always been won and lost in the trenches, and Miami's front 4 could not generate pass rush to save their life. To make matters worse, their blitzes were utterly ineffective, and equally unable to generate any kind of pressure. The Steelers O-Line, while boasting many pro-bowl calibur players, has looked out of sync and awful this pre-season, so for them to dominate Miami like they did was suprising.
!) Quite possibly the only thing that looked worse than Miami's defensive line was their offensive line. They were OK in pass protection, but couldn't run block to save their life. Poor Ronnie Brown had to be a magician just to manage 30 yards in the game.
The score was close because Batch is an awful, awful NFL QB. While I do think Miami will continue to improve, and I do think they are capable of having a decent season, it became clear that they are not ready to contend with the big boys, which is what they were hoping for this year.

I sooooo wanted the Lions to hand Seattle their asses. Tough loss, but I think they'll have a good season regardless. Over .500.
