50.58 was his time. 50.59 was second place.
Phelps was taking another stroke while the other guy was under water reaching for the pad. Amazing.

Crocker did not win a medal. It was expected for him to be slightly behind at 50M. That's why he doesn't swim that event. I did expect a bigger margin of victory though.

I did just want to point one thing out... What do the greatest QB and greatest swimmer of all time have in common? They both attended the UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN.

Re: Official Summer Olympics 2008 Thread
Canada has won it's first medal - or at least will have when Carol Huynh wrestles for gold at 4:50AM EDT.
ETA: But I think there's some rowing that may take place at 4:30AM EDT and we could get a medal there first, but at least we know we have one. For sure.

Re: Official Summer Olympics 2008 Thread
Canada hasn't been added to the medal list yet. Which means they still have 0.
Until it's updated, they still suck.

Just watched it...
In. Credible.
Everyone was just SHOCKED to see that he won. EVERYONE.
I mean, WHO TAKES A HALF STROKE?!?! Superman!
And like I said before, obviously he was going to trail after 50M because he goes so deep on his dive into the pool.

Phelps will only have influence at the time that he swims (10:58, so both 10:30-11:00 and 10:00-11:30 will be affected), so that rest of the night will probably be 21-24 million. Those two half-hours should be over 30 million at least though, probably 35 million.

Re: Official Summer Olympics 2008 Thread
It's been fairly steady at around 28 million viewers for the week, with Tuesday being the exception averaging 32m.
On Tuesday night for the 10.30 PM block, it averaged 39.5 Million viewers. That was the Womens Team Gymnastics competition. I could see something a bit more than that for when Phelps swims, so maybe something like 43-45 million. With Saturday night having some impact on the numbers.
Saturday night, the first night of competiton, during the 10-10.30 block it averaged 28.3 and 10.30-11.00 it did 26.7m

Re: Official Summer Olympics 2008 Thread
The record peak so far this Olympics is the 41.2 million at 11:00-11:30 on Tuesday, for the Women's Gymnastics Team. I GUESS Phelps could beat that, but being spread over two half-hours will mess that up.
