Re: The Tennis Thread - U.S. Open 07
I like following women's tennis more than watching the matches. I like the top tier competitiveness of Henin/Williams/Sharapova/Vaidisova/Ivanovic fighting among each other, the winners are unpredictable among that pack, but they're always the top players.
But in terms of the play, yeah, it's less interesting.
I feel the same way about women's tennis as I do baseball and football actually. I hate watching baseball and football. But I'm a slave to their boxscores and divisional races on the ticker every night.

I think she drops to 4 or 5. Depending on how Jankovic, Ivanovic and Kuznetsova do.

Donald Young has been the future of American tennis for the last three or four years, and he just won his frist ATP match last week. He's ranked in the 200s or something and I'm already sick of him. Thank you commentators.

*awaits 5 hours straight of Roddick commentator hyperbole*
Though it makes it more funny if they start talking about him beating Federer like they always do when he has a good match or two, and then he gets crapped on again.

Re: The Tennis Thread - U.S. Open 07
The matches have started to get pretty good. Even on the women's side. This Vaidisova/Peer match has been exciting stuff. Final set breaker coming up.
Today has seen a lot of known players go out: Sharapova, Hingis, Murray, Petrova

Re: The Tennis Thread - U.S. Open 07
Shit I wish my local stations were televising mid-day action... tough as shit loss(7-5 in 3rd set tiebreak... jesus) for Vaidisova and a huge huge oppurtunity wasted, the bottom half was hers for the taking if she was playing like she was at Wimbledon/Australia... think she might've been rusty from a summer off. Peer is also someone who will be a top ten player soon though, so no credit lost on her side. The top half vs bottom half seperation is now. Death row vs nothings. My favorite day is tomorrow, round of 16 day where everyone plays. Excited. edit - Wait, no it's not. Nevermind.

Re: The Tennis Thread - U.S. Open 07
Venus-Ivanovic was hella ugly... no energy in points. The latter's looked tired lately actually, in Toronto it was the same. I expected Venus to win anyways, though still. Oh and I'm beginning to think Ljubicic's high ranking is an inside joke by the tour. When was the last time he made it to the 4th round in a slam?

So much for that monkey being off his back. Still has a 1-10 record in 5 set matches.

Certainly you didn't expect him to win TWO five setters this tournament. That's just crazy talk.

Women's Singles - Quarter-Finals Justine Henin BEL (1) vs. Serena Williams USA (8) Jelena Jankovic SRB (3) vs. Venus Williams USA (12) --------------------------------------------------- Agnes Szavay HUN vs. Svetlana Kuznetsova RUS (4) Anna Chakvetadze RUS (6) vs. Shahar Peer ISR (18)
The two top half matches will be played tomorrow and Wednesday night, with Henin/Serena doing battle tomorrow. Both should be great matches and I expect one Williams to be in the semifinals, and I think it'll be Venus.

Holy shit that was a great match between Blake and Haas. I can't believe Blake didn't win though. He had it.

Re: The Tennis Thread - U.S. Open 07
I can. He's James Blake, and he does not do well in a) tight matches or b) matches in the second week of a major. The intersection of those two did not bode good things for James in that fifth set.

Re: The Tennis Thread - U.S. Open 07
Jeez, both Monaco and Djokovic are completley spent and it's only the 3rd set. They both look like they could give up if it goes to 4 or 5.
Novak's getting too tired again, like at Wimbledon. He plays too all-out.

Re: The Tennis Thread - U.S. Open 07
The Monaco match was great until he started fading in the fourth. I find Djokovic's ball bouncing highly annoying and wanted Monaco to win. Still very impressive for Monaco considering he's a clay court player. Bravo!

And Justine takes the first set 7-6, I really thought she was going to lose that after getting broken back at 5-4.
