 Re: The NHL 07/08 thread
I'd love for someone like Gagner or Schremp to make the team, but I just can't see MacTavish doing it. The Oilers need some offence though, they were dead last in goals for last season (mostly due to the Smyth trade). And they didn't do much in the off-season. On forward they got:
Penner - Horcoff - Hemsky Torres - Stoll
that are really their only offensive forwards. With the loss of Smyth, Sykora, Lupul and Pisani they're really gonna be struggling. I guess that's why they invited Carter to camp. On defence they should be fine, but on forward it's gonna be a real problem.

 WOKJ's NHL Fantasy league anyone?
The season starts soon and all, and I was thinking today, why not try a fantasy league. NHL watchers may be less than say football, but there's enough of us here to do a playoff tournament when that comes, there's probably enough for this. I started a league here http://hockey.fantasysports.yahoo.com/hockey (password: wokj) where you can see the rules, but here's what they are anyways We would choose
8 forwards 4 defensemen 2 goalies
We can also play with a 3-4 man bench rule like football, though I don't think it'd work as good here and I don't think it'd be needed, for now I didn't include that.
Scoring breakdown
Forwards/Defensemen Goals 3 Points Assists 2 Points Plus/Minus 1 Points Powerplay Goals 1.5 Points Shorthanded Goals 2 Points Game-Winning Goals 1.5 Points
Goalie Wins 4 Points Goals Against -0.5 Points Saves 0.1 Points Shutouts 2 Points
*note - The specific types of goals and wins are add-on points to the main one. For example, a power play goal would include the 3 for a regular goal, plus 1.5, giving 4.5 overall, a shutout is worth 6 points, etc. I can adjust any of that too any time. I set the draft day for Sept. 26th at 7:00 ET to get through the registration, but we can decide on a new one if anyone wants. For the moment it'll work like a football one, where if you show up live, good, and the people that don't will get their players automatically selected. So anyways, if anyone wants to join, sign up. Could be interesting. Some hockey noobs can play if you only occasionally watch the sport... and it'll give you a reason to follow it if nothing else I don't really know if this'll be a success or not, but we can give it a try

I'm in of course. Only thing is.... that draft time doesn't work for me. I have class at exactly that time. Could we do it later that evening?

Yeah, we can figure it out if more people join, get a consensus choice.

I do hope it's not just the two of us, though.... Though I'm sure jmart will join, probably Chip as well.

I'll join.
That link isn't working for me though. There's no place to put in the password. What's the League ID?

ID is 59106 (look at the link that Shack posted), password is wokj. Shack, you should change the link, as the one you posted only works for people already in the league.

I'm TOTALLY in. How does draft work? We have to be here at a certain time to do it live? And how exactly does it work? I want all my players. Haha. Peace, Mike

Re: WOKJ's NHL Fantasy league anyone?
Well on whatever day and time we choose, we go to the site and pick the players one by one. I haven't really done fantasy that much but I assume we can pick any position at any time on our "turn", obviously strategy is involved for goalies and defencemen (like whether to pick one of the top goalie early and miss out on a big forward, or take lots of early forwards and take the risk of faltering in the defencemen category, etc.) The people not there have their picks selected automatically, though I think they can rank in order of preference beforehand if they want (there's probably a fair default ranking if you don't do that too). Thanks by the way. It's getting there!

Thanks by the way. It's getting there! So it goes through all of us playing in the game, as we pick one player at a time? And we just pick any player (forward, defense, goalie)? And how do we determine the picking order - is it randomly generated? Sorry for all the questions, but I'm not up on the fantasy league stuff - just wondering! Peace, Mike

I'm guessing picking order is random btw

Re: WOKJ's NHL Fantasy league anyone?
Yeah, there's default rankings in case you miss the draft. You can also edit them, I'm doing so now just in case.
So for the draft next week, I'm able to go Monday up until around 4 pm, Tuesday after 7 pm, Wednesday up until 4 pm and then after 7 pm, Thursday not at all, and Friday all day. So any draft time in those parameters would work for me.

Re: WOKJ's NHL Fantasy league anyone?
Also, Shack, if there's fewer of us playing, can we up the number of players per team? So there's not a lot of players left undrafted?

Peace, Mike I thought you lived in Quebec? Where are you, France? This is getting difficult to plan heh, since it appears your timezone is 8 hours later than me and trix(???). Or was there a mix-up somewhere in there. If you really are that far ahead, we could do it on Friday because that's the only day it would work with trix. Maybe Friday at 6 ET or something like that.

Friday would be the best for me, as I have no class on that day. But yeah, where are you, Mike? 8 hrs ahead of Shack and I would be like Germany or something.

Re: WOKJ's NHL Fantasy league anyone?
That's right, I'm living in Denmark right now (which is "only" 6 hours ahead of EST - my usual timezone in Canada).
Trix, you have classes at 4pm during the day? If you guys are really 8 hours behind me as you say, what about setting the draft time for some time around 4-4:30pm your time (which would be midnight-12:30am my time). Or any idea you might have. At least with midnight I can stretch it and come on. 4am though is just smack dab in the middle of any normal person's sleep.
Thanks guys.
Peace, Mike
