Re: Levy's Ramblings aka NFL Power Ranking: 2008 Edition
Week 4:
1. (up 2) New York Giants (3-0) Ah, the blessings of the bye week. With their NFL East rivals taking losses, the Giants slide to the top spot, especially since their win against Washington's just gotten a lot more impressive.
2. (up 2) Tennessee Titans (4-0) Thank god for the Titans, otherwise this column would be known as the NFC East Power rankings from now on. If you're a Titans fan you can start saving for Tampa, you know the money is better spent than at the stock market.
3. (down 2). Dallas Cowboys (3-1) Are the Cowboys weaker than we thought? Or are their NFC East rivals just that good? I say the latter. The Cowboys should still be the favorites in the NFC, expect their dropoff to be temporary.
4. (up 7) Washington Redskins (3-1) Who would have thought them to be here after their loss against the Giants. Everyone, including me, had them as the bait in the NFC East. Now they're another playoff-contender. Get Jason Campbell on your fantasy team while you can.
5. (down 3) Philadelphia Eagles (2-2) Yeah, they lost against Chicago and I was tempted to put them lower, but after looking at the alternatives they belong here - especially if Westbrook will be healthy again.
6. (up 1) Pittsburgh Steelers (3-1) They gutted out another win, but now they are down to their fourth running back. For a team that so heavily relies on their running game not good news.
7. (up 3) San Diego Chargers (2-2) The first three quarters against Oakland looked really ugly. As a matter of fact they dropped to the lower teens in my virtual ranking. But the rallye was very impressive. No harm done!
8. (up 5) Carolina Panthers (3-1) Like Tampa they beat Chicago and Atlanta. But a loss against Minnesota and a win against San Diego is the better calling card.
9. (up 8) Tampa Bay Buccaneers (3-1) Like Carolina they beat Chicago and Atlanta. But a loss against New Orleans and a win against Green Bay is the worse calling card.
10. (up 2) Buffalo Bills (4-0) But, but, they are undefeated. Boo, fricking, hoo. If they beat San Diego in Week 7 I consider them real, not a second before that.
11. (up 10) Chicago Bears (2-2) Philly was without Westbrook and made crucial mistakes at the Goal Line, but a win against one of the top teams always will be rewarded with a big jump in the rankings.
12. (down 7) Denver Broncos (3-1) For three weeks Cutler was on cloud nine. Now he and his Broncos fell - hard. Their defense couldn't stop one of the worst offenses in the league and the offense made mistake after mistake after mistake. The Playoffs are no piece of cake for them.
13. (up 1) Jacksonville Jaguars (2-2) Jacksonville righted their ship after the 0-2 start. Still, the OT win against Houston was nothing to write home about. If the fake punt doesn't work, they lose this game.
14. (up 1) Indianapolis Colts (1-2) If Peyton and Eli had spent their bye week at home playing flag football with playgorund rules, Peyton would have been picked second...
15. (up 1) New England Patriots (2-1) They seem to stick with Cassell for the season. Let the second-guessing begin.
16. (down 10) Green Bay Packers (2-2) The honeymoon phase is over for Aaron Rodgers. They better start winning again or they'll start calling for #4 again.
17. (up 2) New Orleans Saints (2-2) They still have no defense but that doesn't matter against a Martz offense.
18. (down 9) Minnesota Vikings (1-3) Their only win against Green Bay just became a lot less worth. Okay, they lost against the best defense in the NFL last week, but 1-3 is a tough start to swallow if your goal were the playoffs.
19. (down 11) Baltimore Ravens (2-1) The game against Pittsburgh has shown that the Ravens aren't what we thought them to be. Having a 2-1 record with wins against the 3rd and 4th worst teams of the NFL doesn't look that impressive.
20. (up 6) Seattle Seahawks (1-2) Deion Branch and Bobby Engram have become healthy and will start in week 5. Too bad they face the Giants.
21. (up 1) New York Jets (2-2) I haven't thrown a football in years but I am convinced I could throw three Touchdowns against Arizona.
22. (up 5) Atlanta Falcons (2-2) One of the few predictable teams this season. They will beat on weaker prey, but get slaughtered by any decent team.
23. (up 2) Miami Dolphins (1-2) I'm hearing Miami's coaching staff spent their bye week trying to find 13 other obscure college game plans for the rest of the season.
24. (unchanged) San Francisco 49ers (2-2) Good against bad teams, bad against good teams. Your 49ers of 08.
25. (down 2) Arizona Cardinals (2-2) Has Whisenhunt riding money on his fantasy team and Warner as his starting QB? Otherwise you can't justify putting him in as a starter. He's washed up, done, stop putting him in the game. He's great in garbage time but the interception he threw without any pressure should have been enough to put him out of his misery.
26. (down 6) Houston Texans (0-3) Andre Johnson is not himself. And without this threat the Texans are neither.
27. (up 4) Kansas City Chiefs (1-3) Their win against Denver was probably a bigger shocker than New Englands loss against Miami. However, don't expect another team to be stupid enough to dare the Chief to beat them with the running game when they have only mock-QBs on the field.
28. (unchanged) Oakland Raiders (1-3) Finally! Lane Kiffin is out. Now they can start sucking in the first half, too.
29. (down 11) Cleveland Browns (1-3) I know, it doesn't seem logical that I had them in the low teens without a win and just when they beat Cincinatti I drop them eleven spots. Let's just put it this way. Thanks to their horrifiyng schedule it was still possible they were a good team. But after struggling mightily against the terrible Browns with their second string QB it's for sure that they are not a good football team.
30. (down 1) Cincinnati Bengals (0-4) The good news is they're not getting blown out. The bad news is a loss is still a loss.
31. (down 1) Detroit Lions (0-3) Hey, at least they have a good hockey team.
32. (unchanged) St. Louis Rams (0-4) They tried the combination old coach, new Quarterback and failed miserably. Now they're going to try new coach, old Quarterback. Doesn't sound better.

Hate to admit it, but you're right about the Browns. Hopefully they can atleast turn the offense around when Cribbs, Stallworth, and Steinbach come back. Their games are so boring.

Wow, didn't see the Giants jumping to the top How can you honestly not have Tennessee #1? Seriously? They're defense will do everything but rape you! And if they still had Pacman, they would do that too!

I love Chip's version of Power Rankings. You should use the format for College Football too.

Re: Levy's Ramblings aka NFL Power Ranking: Week 4
College football is too all over the place. Because unlike the NFL, all teams aren't equal. I mean, in college, if USC was all seniors who last year won the championship as juniors and are 11-1 at the end of the season... and a team like... Hawaii is a bunch of freshman, but are 12-0, I would easily rank USC ahead because of the other factors. In the NFL, they're all pro's. The teams all have the same salary cap. And just because a team like Cincy has 0 wins, doesn't mean they don't have less talent than other teams, it just means they suck.

Re: Levy's Ramblings aka NFL Power Ranking: 2008 Edition
Week 5:
1. (unchanged) New York Giants (4-0) That was as dominating a win as possible. Doesn't matter who they miss, they still look better than at any point during their Superbowl season. And don't blame it just on Seattle being bad, they had the second best rush defense before Brandon Jacobs ran all over them.
2. (unchanged) Tennessee Titans (5-0) The Titan can send a big thank you cards to the officials for still being undefeated. Your offense makes a false start, yet the play is not blown dead and you get a ticky-tacky Roughing the Passer call? That was one of the worst calls ever. A false start is a dead-ball foul, you fools.
3. (up 1) Washington Redskins (4-1) Yes, they're legit. Winning back-to-back in Dallas and Philadelphia is impressive. They stayed patient when they were behind and it paid off. At this point maybe even the favorites to win the division since they still play the Giants at home.
4. (down 1). Dallas Cowboys (4-1) Like the Giants, they didn't manage to put the Bengals away. It was much closer than the final result suggests. But I wouldn't worry about that.
5. (up 1) Pittsburgh Steelers (4-1) They stopped the run and with that destroyed all hopes of the Jaguars. And as a bonus Ben Roethlisberger had his best game of the season. They'll be 5-1 when they face the double-headed NFC East Monster Giants and Redskins which should comfort them a bit.
6. (up 2) Carolina Panthers (4-1) Yes, Kansas is really bad, but holding them to just 127 total yards and no score is still impressive. That they managed to score 34 points on the other side wasn't bad either.
7. (up 5) Denver Broncos (4-1) Nice bounce-back after their total self-destructiona against Kansas. They still have no run defense which will haunt them against smarter teams, so #7 is probably their limit right now.
8. (up 3) Chicago Bears (3-2) They finally get their act together. The D is playing great and Kyle Orton doesn't make too many mistakes. If they keep this up, they should be able to win their division.
9. (unchanged) Tampa Bay Buccaneers (3-2) Although Griese got injured, the outcome of the game probably wasn't influenced. If you play the Broncos you should run the ball far more than throw it, but the Bucs failed to do so and lost. They averaged more than 6 yards per rushing attempt yet only carried the ball 9 times in the second half. Stupid it, who stupid does.
10. (down 5) Philadelphia Eagles (2-3) There's a pattern right here: The Eagles are hot out of the gate and then slowly fade away. With Westbrook now hurting with a rib injury, the Eagles look as if they're the odd man out in the NFC East again.
11. (down 1) Buffalo Bills (4-1) Yeah, Edwards got injured, but that wasn't the problem. They just couldn't find a way to stop Kurt Warner. It's an area they desperately need to improve over the bye week. With San Diego and Miami coming up they can easily fall behind the Patriots again.
12. (up 3) New England Patriots (3-1) Matt, meet Randy. Randy, meet Matt. Bellichick must have formerly introduced them during the bye week since they clicked for the first time on the field. However the Patriots defense and O-Line has been full of holes. Even with their easy schedule, this could lead to problems.
13. (down 6) San Diego Chargers (2-3) Yeah, we get it. Norv Turner is a bad coach. If you get fooled by the exact same offense the Dolphins ran two weeks ago, the coaching staff has to be blamed.
14. (down 1) Jacksonville Jaguars (2-3) The O-Line is hurting and the biggest victim is the Jags running game. After their monstrous outing against Indianapolid things are back to awful for Taylor and Jones-Drew who combined for just 26 yards. This is not how you get into the play-offs.
15. (up 4) Baltimore Ravens (2-2) They got screwed over. Nevertheless this was probably their best game this season, hence the improvement in the rankings.
16. (up 2) Minnesota Vikings (2-3) 4 of their 5 games could have gone either way. Their defense is good, their offense mediocre and the special teams are just horrible. They should put Tavaris Jackson back at the helm because the season is a lost cause anyway. If you give Peterson the Ball 21 times against a terrible defense and only get 32 yards out of it, you have a problem.
17. (unchanged) New Orleans Saints (2-3) They moved the ball at will and still lost. Story of the year for the Saints. Bush could probably rip five TD returns accompanied by four Brees TD passes and they'd still lose. What a waste!
18. (down 4) Indianapolis Colts (2-2) If it wasn't for the braindead decision making of Sage Rosenfels the Colts would have been done for this season. But that shouldn't fool you into thinking anything other than that the Colts are just absolutely terrible this year. They could have easily been 0-4 at this point and noone would complain about that.
19. (up 6) Arizona Cardinals (3-2) Kurt Warner had his first all-out good game the season and now contemplates retirement. Just proves again that the Cardinals are a team of contrasts. If you're a betting person just stay away from their games. No matter if they play the best or the worst, it could get either way.
20. (up 3) Miami Dolphins (2-2) The Miami Wilcats have now beaten New England and San Diego back to back. Eventually teams will figure out their trickery, but as long as it works, they should continue with their offensive scheme.
21. (up 1) Atlanta Falcons (3-2) Before last week they easily beat terrible teams and were a lost cause against decent ones. With their win against Green Bay and the performances by Ryan and Turner they've shown more upside than downside potential for the first time. Next week against Chicago will be a real tester though.
22. (down 1) New York Jets (2-2) Thanks to the Giants Brett "I have a better record than my old team" Favre isn't the talk of the town anymore.
23. (down 7) Green Bay Packers (2-3) You could have made excuses for their first two losses against Dallas and Tampa. But losing for the third time in a row - against Atlanta - just brought the Packers down to earth. They're probably crying their eyes out for Favre, but they have much bigger issues right now.
24. (unchanged) San Francisco 49ers (2-3) They blew the chance to go with confidence into their two games against NFC East teams. Now they're looking at going to the bye week with a losing record. Again.
25. (up 1) Houston Texans (0-4) They had no business to lose their last two games and are probably far better than their record. But if you don't get the W, no one cares about that.
26. (down 6) Seattle Seahawks (1-3) Just how bad is the NFC West? They are 1-3, got clobbered by the Giants and they're probably still favorites to win their division.
27. (up 1) Oakland Raiders (1-3) Greg Knapp is one week in charge and still has no loss. I think that must be a team record.
28. (up 1) Cleveland Browns (1-3) They don't play a team with a losing record until Week 12. Ouch!
29. (up 1) Cincinnati Bengals (0-5) They're playing against good opponents and keeping it close most of the time. However there's still the dreaded 0 in the win column.
30. (down 3) Kansas City Chiefs (1-4) Larry Johnson is averaging exactly 100 rushing yards over his last two games. Unfortunately only two of them came last week.
31. (unchanged) Detroit Lions (0-4) Is Jon Kitna getting benched? At least he didn't get the chance to window-dress his horrible stats in garbage time last week. Maybe his hotline to God is down?
32. (unchanged) St. Louis Rams (0-4) Can't we just give them 12 more bye weeks. Football is much more fun when you don't have to suffer through a Rams game.

That isn't true, if for example the play had been blown dead and the QB was hit it is still a personal foul and that overrides the False start. That is in the rule book. Although, I honestly didn't even see a false start there or an attempt to even stop the play so maybe they screwed up and ment illegal formation or something.

Re: Levy's Ramblings aka NFL Power Ranking: Week 5
Gregg Easterbrook wrote: Adventures in Officiating: A roughing the quarterback call sustained Tennessee's late winning drive at Baltimore, changing what would have been a punting situation into a first down. Not only was the call ticky-tacky -- Terrell Suggs hit the arm of Kerry Collins and brushed his helmet, and the contact was far from violent -- but the Flaming Thumbtacks had been whistled for a false start, which should have stopped action at the snap. Officials inexplicably let the down continue, blowing whistles but not stepping into the center of the action, as zebras do to break up plays. Had the officials called the play correctly, action would have stopped and Tennessee would have faced third-and-15; instead, Tennessee got a first-and-10. This was a worse screw-up than the inadvertent whistle in the Denver-San Diego game. That was pure error; in this case, the zebras seemed not to know the rules: the action stops on false starts, because it is a dead-ball foul.

That is why I am wondering if it wasn't actually an illegal formation. I saw the replay I saw no movement. Those referees screw up that all the time. As for the tic tac nature well they are stating to baby Qb's you can barely breath on one after the ball is gone and not get a penalty.

In the Giants-Seahawks game Justin Tuck had a rather late low hit against Hasselbeck and wasn't flagged and there was another such situation in another game. I don't know if the officiating has become worse this year, but there have been pretty huge screw-ups this year, like the non-facemask call against Bush who then fumbled the ball.

Re: Levy's Ramblings aka NFL Power Ranking: Week 5
Think it is crazy for anyone to have Tenn over the Giants.
Giants are a clear #1.
Just based on last week, Giants dominated and Tenn barely won.
Plus the Giants beat Washington who is better than anyone Tenn has played.
And to be fair, no one that Tenn has beaten is over 500 for the year right now!
CAN YOU SAY TENN IS A JOKE OF A #1 OR UNBEATEN TEAM. LOL!
ESPECIALLY SINCE THE GIANTS HAVE BEEN THE BEST TEAM IN THE NFL FOR THE SECOND YEAR IN A ROW AND ARE THE SUPER BOWL CHAMPIONS UNTIL SOMEONE BEATS THEM!

Tennessee, if the season continues how it's been going... may only play ONE team with a winning record this year against Pitt in Week 15...
HAH!

Re: Levy's Ramblings aka NFL Power Ranking: Week 5
Tennessee is only ranked #4 at Footballoutsiders based on their play-by-play-performance whereas the Giants are comfortably ahead - even takng into account opponent adjustment. Sure, they have a tough schedule from week 8 on, but at this point you really want to rank a team ahead that had as easy a schedule as well and is lucky to be undefeated ahead of an undefeated Superbowl champion? That's just biased, nothing else
