 Re: The Tennis Thread
The Wimbledon final this year is a case of 'whoever wins, we lose'. Both are arrogant tennis villains, so to speak, though Kyrgios obviously to a much greater degree. There's a part of me that wants Djokovic to win just to spite Kyrgios. I don't want his head to get even bigger and more obnoxious, but I also don't want Novak to get closer to Nadal's 22 slam titles.

 Re: The Tennis Thread
I'm glad the better player won, and Djokovic, damn he can play some great tennis, but Nadal and Federer are going to stay 1 and 2 for me, no matter how many more Djoko may win. Hoping Nadal can come back for one more French title next year.

 Re: The Tennis Thread
Djokovic will surpass both Nadal and Federer in terms of slams. We are lucky to have witnessed all three dominate the sport for so long and almost at the same time.
I never used to like Djoka but I do like him now. He's also a nice guy - contrary to the media persona.

 Re: US Open 2022
It's a shame she crashed out at the third round. I was rooting for Serena to go deep. At least she had a pleasing send off, and she's unequivocally the GROOT (GReatest Of Our Time). But damn, she's looking big these days. Can't be easy playing tennis with those thighs, and in such a bulky dress.
Nadal was rewarded for his win over Fognini with a match against Gasquet, who is just making up the numbers these days. Easy win for Rafa. But a really tough prospect next in Tiafoe. He may not come out of that one unscathed or at all.

 Re: The Tennis Thread
Medvedev might be world number one but he's just not the next Nadal/Federer/Djokovic that he's been projected to be. He's still good, the best of the rest, but Kyrgios is also pretty good when he wants to be. He's certainly peaking this year. I don't like the prick, but if Nadal goes out I'm kind of hoping he wins it because I just know it will go to his head and the downfall will ensue, lol.

Sadly, Nadal went out to Tiafoe as I suspected. But at least Medvedev is also out. I'm rooting for Kyrgios or Tiafoe now. Anybody but the Russkies.

 Re: The Tennis Thread
The quarter-final lineup is nice. It's going to be an all-new slam winner this year, which the U.S. Open was always the more likely to produce. It's a varied list of winners over the years, as opposed to the dominance of Djokovic in Australia or Nadal in France. The favourite is probably Alcaraz, but there's plenty of others that could win as well, and your maiden slam always comes with nerves so it's up in the air. I reckon Kyrgios vs Ruud and Alcaraz vs Rublev semi-finals, but I hope I'm wrong and Tiafoe gets through against the Russian.
It wouldn't look good for a Russian to win the U.S. Open right now.

Ruud has a chance to get to #1 which would be weird, but I guess less so if it's because he won

Alcaraz is in trouble against the Italian, but Tiafoe got through! Ruud will probably win it all but hopefully Tiafoe does.

 Re: The Tennis Thread
Phew. Glad Swiatek got through against the Belarussian. Hopefully she wins against Jabeur. It will be her first slam outside the French. She's never even got to another final before despite being world number one. But she's still so young. Only 21. Lots of time to win many more. And I just know she won't completely kill her career to gain a few headlines like Naomi Osaka did.

So, Ruud or Alcarez. My heart goes Ruud but my head goes Alcarez.

So with Swiatek winning, Europe reigns supreme yet again. But I'm liking Swiatek. She is a good, hardworking champion with no bullshit, and I think she can just carry on winning for a few years.

New king official. Alcarez seems more similar to Federer than Nadal with his big shots.

 Re: The Tennis Thread
The men's game is so strong, and the future looks good. Alcarez probably won't dominate, but he'll win his fair share of tournaments. He's got his first slam win, and he's only 19. But you just know he won't be a one hit wonder like Emma Raducanu. This is the first of many.
Ruud will also come good and eventually win a slam. He's too good not to.

 Re: The Tennis Thread
The post-US Open rankings are out and they just prove that Emma Raducanu's US Open win last year was a complete fluke. It doesn't matter how many people play defence for her anymore. The numbers don't lie. She's dropped 72 places to 83rd. That kind of movement is just not normal. The next biggest move, which is pretty big, is Leylah Fernandez moving 26 spots down to 40th. Most just move one or two places, or at most ten. Raducanu's US Open win is a once-in-a-lifetime fluke because since then she hasn't been able to win shit, or even get to third round of a single slam.
Not taking anything away from her win. She was excellent at last year's US Open. She just isn't a top player and she's not the next big champion as everyone expected after her memorable win. But she'll always have that win, which is nice for her.

 Re: The Tennis Thread
Federer retires.
One of my favorite athletes of all time. Him beating the shit out of everyone in mid 2000s was sublime. I loved when he played Roddick with American commentators trying to talk themselves into how the latter is going to win.

 Re: The Tennis Thread
I only appreciated Federer once Djokovic came onto the scene. Nadal has always been my guy.
I'm not sad Federer is officially retiring. He should have done it at least two years ago. We're not losing a great champion in 2022. We lost him years ago. It's better for his legacy to not have lots of injuries and absences from tournaments, or even worse loads of second round defeats.
Now he should concentrate on making RF as popular as Fred Perry.
