 Re: 2007 NFL Discussion
Quote: LAS VEGAS -- Nevada sports books lost a record $2.6 million on Super Bowl bets when the New York Giants upset the New England Patriots 17-14, gambling regulators said Tuesday.
A flood of small bets came in on the Giants, who were 12-point underdogs against undefeated New England, the Goliath that looked unbeatable.
"People came into Las Vegas and they wanted to root for David," said Jay Kornegay, the executive director of the Las Vegas Hilton race and sports book. "The anticipated large wagers that we expected on the Patriots just never materialized."
Kornegay said the amount wagered was weighted to the Giants by as much as 60 percent -- heavy action that caused many books to shift their opening lines from the Patriots being favored by 14 points down to 12.
Making matters worse for the casinos, many gamblers bet the Giants to win outright on the "money line" and won payouts of up to $475 for every $100 wagered.
Another large group took the Giants plus 12 points and got paid roughly even money.
Still another big segment bet a two-way parlay that the Giants would cover with the 12-point spread and that the total points scored in Sunday's game would be under 54 -- for a payoff of more than 2.5 times their bet.
"They're still cashing at this moment," Kornegay said. "The last two days, all I hear is, 'I told you so.'"
The total amount bet at Nevada's 174 sports books was $92.1 million, the third-highest amount ever, but down for the second consecutive year after a record $94.5 million was bet in 2006.
The last time the casinos lost money on the Super Bowl was in 1995, when the San Francisco 49ers blew out the San Diego Chargers, 49-26, and Nevada books lost $400,000, said Gaming Control Board analyst Frank Streshley.
Much of the "smart money," or bets from experienced handicappers, went with the Patriots, but the public favored the underdogs.
"The Giants turned out to be public darlings, and Eli Manning went from kicking him off the curb five weeks ago to the kid they'd like to see succeed," said Jimmy Vaccaro, a Las Vegas-based oddsmaker for AmericanWagering.com and host of a radio sports talk show.
Even in Las Vegas casinos, the fans backed the Giants in large numbers, he said.
"When the Giants did something good, it was about 70-30 applause as opposed to when the Patriots did something good," Vaccaro said. http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/playoffs0 ... id=3232876

The Giants are not a team built to win 12+ games a year, and consistently compete. You still haven't learned, total games don 't matter as much as playoff games and wins. Since 2000, there have been 3 wildcard teams that have won the Super Bowl. Giants 4-0 this year on the road every game and Super Bowl Champions. Also, the way that they stood up to your mighty Patriots, you are no expert to say that the Giants won't compete. Manning got confidence playing againist your Pats defense in Game 16 and went on a great run. Steve Smith was hurt for 10 weeks and he is progressing greatly. Bradshaw is coming on and with 2 very good RB, they can eat up the clock againist anyone. And the line that destroyed Brady will be back next year.

So keep on being arrogant and cocky, like the cheating Patriots, but the NFL leading Giants sacked the QB 53 times and basically showed Brady getting his ass kicked. As I said all year, the Pats and Moss weren't the same the second half of the year. I just looked and in the last 10 games, they only had 3 blow-outs but lots of close games. Many of which were saved by the refs. Not even close to a deserving team of a perfect record. Only a loser in the end. Anyway, go enjoy the off-season all Pats, and remember cheaters never win.

The only possible loss is if Strahan retires. If that happens Tuck will become a starter and he is easily his equal. The only free agent is Kawika Mitchell, but the Giants have cap space to hold him if they want. Also: Matthias Kiwanuka will be healthy again. The personnel on the Giants D is safe.

 Re: 2007 NFL Discussion
Levy. You just said Justin Tuck was as good as Michael Strahan. Do you realize Strahan is a Top 5 DE of all time?
Justin Tuck COULD become just as good. COULD. But he is not even close right now.
Also, to the "the Giants had the most sacks this season" statement, that number is EXTREMELY inflated due to the Eagles game with the rookie in opposite Osi.
The Giants played the GAME OF THEIR LIFE on Sunday. They will NEVER play a game that good again. And they won by 3.
And people still don't remember that this was Brady's first year with these new receivers.
Grill, what the HELL are you talking about? Having a perfect season requires A TON of luck. The ONLY game they got "lucky" in was the Baltimore game. But in the end, it did come down to who kept their cool and who made the most plays.
Also, one more thing Levy. Why don't you ask the NFL to investigate ALL teams, that way we can find out if the Giants cheated in THIS Super Bowl...

This is why people complain about sports fans, all of this who is better fighting back as forth as if any of us have anything to do or anything at stake with what happened. Part of sports is trash talking, if the Pats had won, lots of peopel would be going on about the 19-0 season. As for leaving the field early, everyone thought the game was over, it would have been nice for Bill to come out, is it the end of the world no. Maybe its just cause I remember when the Pats couldn't string 2 wins together in a row, but Iosing the Superbowl sucked, but it was way better then watching games as a kid when they couldn't buy a win. I always come into this thread hoping for "discussion."

$1,850 now. It's good to see that Simmons will be donating what he gets to the Jimmy Fund.

If the Giants would've lost, they would've burned their shirts.
At least the Patriots actually HELPED people.
The Giants are a classless organization.

The Giants are a classless organization. You're such an idiot. The Pats didn't donate anything. All the gear from every losing team is shipped to the third world. And why exactly are the Giants classless? What a joke!

Bill Simmons you were just called out as a bandwagon fan A bandwagon fan is a fan who hops from team to team like, say, from the Giants to the Jets. Is this some sort of a joke? Is this forum getting punked? I don't see Ashton anywhere. I never knew that you had to have blind faith in your team to be a true fan.
