Re: 2008 Major League Baseball Discussion
That's a great deal for the Yankees. They are now much better than last season for less salary. They overbid 10 Million for Sabathia and never should have gotten Burnett but the Teixiera deal per se is fantastic for them. They didn't overpay a lot, bettered their lineup defensively and offensively and took a player away from the Sox

One thing that worries me about CC is his post season record. I don't want another overpaid player that can't perform in the post season. Yanks already have one. (ARod)

Yankees hitting is still flawed away from Tex/ARod, and its gonna be hilarious when Mariano comes in old and crappy and their bullpen stinks. They should have left Joba in there as their future closer, now they cant put him back

(ARod) well we will see. CC has been the best pitcher over the last 2 years and in the playoffs 2 things. 1 he pitches too many innings in the regular season. Hopefully the Yanks won't push him. And Manny killed him in Boston and without Manny, he might have beaten Boston, so again we shall see.

According to ESPN News the Red Sox have signed Brad Penny (OOOH GOODIE!!) to a 1yr/$5m deal. I guess he's worth the risk. It'd be hard not to live up to that contract.

Re: 2008 Major League Baseball Discussion
still wondering what will happening to Manny?
LA, 2 to 3 year deal for about 65 - 75 Million. Anyone else possible?
Don't understand why Angels dropped out. But a friend made a good point. Maybe Boras pissed them off so much with Texeira, they don't want to deal with Boras at all.

The Angels don't want Manny for a very good reason...He's too independent. He maybe a great player, but he is not a good team member, if you know what I am saying. In other words, he's a jerk, and the Angels don't want jerks on the team.

Ok, but as my Angel friend told me and also I have heard on the radio, the Angels have plenty to win their division and get into the playoffs but probably don't have enough to win...per the above people.

Indians signed Carl Pavano. I guess they're in the market for pitchers who will get hurt in the first game. Where the hell is Jaret Wright?

I like the Irony here.
Pat Burrell, who played for the Phillies for nine years, is now playing for...the Tampa Bay Rays (a 2 year $16 million deal). Isn't that ironic? Last year, his team beat the Rays in the World Series, now he is joining the team he beat.

Re: 2008 Major League Baseball Discussion
Another interesting story (from mlb.com)
Jason Giambi is going back to the A's, where he started, and got his 2000 MVP awards before moving in with the Yankees the next year. Now, he is going back home for another year, to help the A's offense, which was fiscal last year. Good news for us, but bad news for us Angels.

Re: 2008 Major League Baseball Discussion
So I guess it's an offseason of risks for the Red Sox. First there was Brad Penny. Now there's John Smoltz and Rocco Baldelli. All one year deals, all cheap, and all worth the risks. If Penny is in anyway a glimpse of his former self he'll be a solid number four guy in the rotation. Smoltz should be good for some appearances in the last half of the year out of the bullpen in place of Timlin (anyone would be actually). And if the injuries don't get Baldelli again he'll be a decent fourth outfielder. The lineup is still the big question mark. It's good as it is right now, but not compared to the Rays or the Yankees. The big difference in the teams is that if one of the Red Sox key guys goes down, there isn't much there to back it up. If there isn't someone out there right now that no one is paying attention, they'll most likely have to make a move before the deadline.

Sox sign Varitek to a one year deal for five million. I guess Tek decided that it was either this or retirement. At least he has a chance to redeem himself.

Manny's a frickin' idiot.
Why wouldn't you take $25m for a year, hope the economy gets better, and see what you can get next time?

He already turned down 2yr/$45m, he'd look like an ass. The good news for him though is no matter what happens the Sox are still paying him $2 million a year until something like 2020 so he's set for awhile. My guess is that the Dodgers will counter with the original deal and he'll either sign there, or the Giants will step in with a couple of million more and he'll go there.

Was going to post, Manny is only stupid if he has no money in the bank. And if you are correct, he has 22 million coming over the next 11 years, no big deal. First Manny got Boras for a reason, to get him a nice deal. Why settle for 1 year right now - as that would be a hit to Boras ego and Manny's pride. Don't worry he will come out with a better deal than this....and remember, how many times doesn't Boras come out on top??? Not too often!!!

Re: 2008 Major League Baseball Discussion
ARod tested positive for steroids back in 2003 when MLB was conducting an "anonymous" survey to see if they had a need for mandated steroid testing, according to Sports Illustrated. He won the MVP that year. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/baseball/mlb/02/07/alex-rodriguez-steroids/index.html?eref=T1Dang. Now I suspect all players of using steroids, even utility infielder types.
