I'm pretty hopeless when it comes to sports. Frankly, I'd sooner shit my pants than sit through an entire football match.

Somewhat inevitably, however, my lack of sports knowledge has just come and bit me in the ass. I've been set the task of making a list of the biggest sports stories of the year so far. Unfortunately, most media outlets don't seem to do retrospectives until the end of the year, and I'm lost as to where to look.

Which is where you kind folk might come in!

Basically, if anyone here could help me compile a list of the biggest sports stories of the year by listing the ones you remember (Worldwide and UK specifically, though American news stories are good too), or if you know of any websites that are good for that kind of stuff - would you be so kind as to write 'em down in this here thread?

Stuff like Paula Radcliffe peeing on the street, Lance Armstrong being tested for drugs, the F1 wheel debacle earlier this year, etc. etc.

Andy Murray beating Henmans ass last week, plus Federer owning Wimbledon again, and pretty much every other major tournament.

Thats what i was going to say, from a british point of view, the rise of Murray.

I can't help with the UK side (Or mostly worldwide for that matter), but here are a few things that I know (Mostly American).

The National Hockey League resumed playing after an entire year in lockout.
The New England Patriots won NFL's Super Bowl XXXIX, making it their third in four years.
The Chicago White Sox won the World Series for the first time since 1917.
The San Antonio Spurs won the NBA Championship.
The University of Southern California (USC) won the NCAA Football National Championship.
The University of North Carolina (UNC) won the NCAA Basketball Championship.
Lance Armstrong wins 7th Tour de France and is then accused by the French of taking performance enhancing drugs.

1. Renault driver Fernando Alonso becomes the youngest Formula One world champion ever - ending the 5 year reign of Michael Schumacher.

2. Kimi Raikkonen - championship runner up with 7 wins - loses championship thanks to his Mclaren's unreliability - but wins the Japanese grand prix from the back of the grid in a last lap overtaking manouvre - in one of the greatest races in F1 history.

3. The US Grand Prix debacle - a 6 car race as all the Michelin shod teams are forced not to race due to concerns the tyres would not survive the turn 13 banking. The FIA (F1 governing body) would not make any concessions to the Michelin teams - and a shocked and stunned Indianaplois crowd watch as Michael Schumacher wins his only victory of the year against the two weakest teams in the championship. This was huge news when it happened.

INDY RACING LEAGUE (IRL):

Dan Wheldon wins championship.

CHAMP CARS:

Frenchman Sebastian Bourdais wins championship.

GP2:

Nico Rosberg (son of 1982 Formula One champion Keke Rosberg) wins the action packed F1 feeder series championship against highly rated Finn Heiki Kovalanien - by overtaking his championship lead in the 2nd last round of the season.

MOTOGP:

Valentino Rossi continues as the dominant force in world motorcycle racing - winning his 5th world championship in a row!

From track and field, Asafa Powell of Jamaica broke the World 100 meters record with a 9.77 seconds run in June.

The best sports moment IMO is the first fight of Castillo Vs Corrales back in may,that was the best and most brutal boxing match i have ever seen and ive been watching boxing for 20 years.
The second best moment was when the white sox won the series after 88 years.

The worse moment was when my favorite boxer ever Felix Trinidad lost back in may by clear decision,good thing he retired,he stayed too long in the fight game just like many great boxers have.

The second worse moment was detroid losing in the NBA finals in game 7.

for embarassing how about Kenny Rogers goings nuts on the camera guy. Rafael Palmeiro also tested positive for steroids, putting his almost guranteed hall of fame postion in question.
