Re: Lance Armstrong banned for life, stripped of 7 Tour wins
I'm not well-versed in this - I don't get why it takes so long to catch people, especially if they have networks of people helping them do it. I know there's caution to prevent false positives and ways to stay ahead of testing methods, but still.
But given that it does, I guess certain athletes are so arrogant they think they'll get away with it forever. But I wonder how they rationalize risking the name of their sport and all athletics. If they can even think that far past themselves.
If I were a clean competitive athlete, I'd have the highest possible contempt for the dopers.

I think Armstrong should be sent to jail. His sins go way beyond just taking drugs to win. His actions over past decade especially browbeating others and suing folks for money must have criminal repercussions. Hopefully he is sued for like billion dollars plus has some jail time.
I would say he is the probably the biggest fraud ever in the sporting history.

Just imagine this, he and his team was supposed to have cheated 7 straight years. Either whomever was running the tests was incompetent beyond belief or Armstrong was clean. nghtvsn seems to have gone all quiet on this topic lately. Meanwhile, reports of death threats against witnesses and investigators are starting to come to light. Quote: Travis Tygart is the head of the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency, which polices U.S. Olympic sports. Lance Armstrong won the world's most grueling event, the Tour de France, seven times. But after Tygart's investigation, Armstrong lost all of his titles. In his first interview, Tygart spoke with us for the premier of a new program, "60 Minutes Sports" on Showtime. Tygart says Armstrong was doping in his very first win at the Tour de France in 1999. The drug was EPO, which boosts endurance.
PELLEY: Was Lance Armstrong personally involved in intimidating these other riders to keep them quiet?
TYGART: He was. It was tough. All -- all these witnesses were -- were scared of the repercussions of them simply telling the truth.
PELLEY: What could Lance Armstrong do to them?
TYGART: Incinerate them.
Former teammate Levi Leipheimer felt the heat. In his sworn affidavit, he says he came to a cycling dinner after he testified to the grand jury. Leipheimer says Armstrong was there and sent Leipheimer's wife a text that read, "Run don't walk."
PELLEY: What did she take it to mean?
TYGART: It's a veiled threat. Knowing her husband had just testified, truthfully, in front of the grand jury and had told citizens of this country about this great fraud. It was a message: You better run. PELLEY: Your investigation showed that there were personal threats made against riders who had decided to come clean. I wonder if there were any threats against you.
TYGART: There were, Scott.
PELLEY: These threats came from where?
TYGART: Emails, letters.
PELLEY: Anonymous?
TYGART: Yeah.
PELLEY: Can you remember any of the lines from the emails or the letters?
TYGART: The worst was probably putting a bullet in my head.
PELLEY: Did you take that seriously?
TYGART: Absolutely. In that same interview Tygart recounts the large bribes Armstrong offered the government's anti-doping regulatory committee and the International Cycling Union... Quote: Cyclist Lance Armstrong once offered a large "donation" to the same agency that recently concluded he and his team had used illegal substances, causing him to be stripped of his seven Tour de Frances wins. The brazenly inappropriate gesture made to the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency is recounted by the agency's CEO Travis Tygart.
Armstrong once gave the International Cycling Union, a regulatory body for his sport, a gift of $100,000. Tygart called that "totally inappropriate." Then someone representing Armstrong tried to give USADA a large sum of money sometime in 2004. "I was stunned," he tells Pelley. "It was clear -- it was a clear conflict of interest for USADA. We had no hesitation in rejecting that offer," says Tygart, who said the amount was "in excess of $150,000." Told by Pelley that "60 Minutes" had learned it was $250,000, Tygart replies, "It was around that ballpark."

Yes Yes. Lance stabbed me in the back for defending him. How despicable. The worst part isn't that he cheated since every other top cyclist was too at the time it was his adamant defense of innocence everytime someone tried to speak the truth by taking them to court or attempting to ruin the accusers' reputations. Myself and other people who attempted to defend him were betrayed and that's that. His rep is ruined. The Oprah interview didn't help anything and hopefully he fades away from the news and just lives on the wealth he amassed before the mess unraveled on him.

Looking at history of Tour de France I am not even sure if there were any true champions without dope. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doping_at_ ... _de_FranceI think the its too difficult for anyone to win without dope. Its crazy at one time they were doing 3500 miles.

The problem of Lance was that he was to greedy. 3 wins would have been enough right?

Sooo....
Asafa Powell. Positive. Tyson Gay. Positive.
People still believe Bolt is clean?
And that Froome guy clearly is juiced as well. Cycling will never learn..

Re: Lance Armstrong banned for life, stripped of 7 Tour wins
I remember hearing that it's relatively easy for Jamaicans to escape getting caught. Not sure of the details though.
In general though, how sure can one really be of any athlete? Apparently it's commonplace to get away with cheating for years and years.

I just talked to a friend about this who rides bikes and he said, everyone or the winners were cheating back then.

Rev wrote: Chippy wrote: Bolt is clean. Until he's proven not Dream on, guys. If everyone around him is doping and he outruns them by a mile he can't be clean. It is the exact same situation it was with Lance. He just knows how to beat the system because he has the money to do it. It is not humanly possible to run those times without being juiced. He will either be caused at the tailend of his career like Lance or he will die "innocent" and early like Flo-Jo

It's obviously humanly possible. Because he's a human.
