Some would say that WB is smart. I would instead call them lucky. It’s good for a studio to have multiple high profile releases during the year as it allows them to publicize their teasers and trailers to a larger audience. From what I’ve heard, WB is loading up Potter with multiple trailers for their 2006 releases and honestly, I can’t think of a better movie to market them with.
The first teaser for Superman Returns is bittersweet . I would go as far as to say that it isn’t very good. Much like the Batman Begins teaser, Superman Returns comes across as very serious and the opposite of most comic book adaptations. I expect the average audience to be somewhat turned off by it. Lets think about it. These are comic books. People want light hearted fun. They want to see comic book style action with villains and heroes facing off.
Then again, what was shown may have been underwhelming but much like the Batman teaser, it promises quality. I lost faith in WB some time ago when they released their first images of Catwoman. But I’m glad to see that WB decided to take their two most iconic characters seriously. Whether they’re successful in their endeavor is a totally different story.
The teaser did have some money shots for the fans. There is some iconic imagery such as Superman floating in the sky against the sun, the silhouette of his hair in the shape of an S and of course, the Kent mailbox. All these are a fanboy’s dream. But is that enough to make the average audience happy with the trailer? Probably not.
