Why oh why did Pixar release that god awful teaser trailer for Cars a year ago? What were they thinking? That was the quite possibly one of the worst previews I had ever seen for a movie? Were they trying to bring everyone’s expectations down? Were they trying to imply that the mighty Pixar’s time to fall has finally come? They had no reason to release anything that early.
A couple of weeks ago, I was relieved when I saw the new one sheet for Cars. And now, I finally got the chance to see the trailer and their marketing makes perfect sense to me.
Last year's The Incredibles and Cars are not being directly marketed towards kids. They know the kiddies will come and see the film. They only need to put in the minimum effort to make it appealing to them. Their marketing is not only adult oriented but also genre specific. How does one grab the interest of those who love their hot rods? You show a bunch of cars racing around, rallyingm and finally, package it in the form of a commercial that you’d find yourself watching on TV.
This is pure genius. They were smart not too focus too much on the cars talking (which had disastrous results in the first teaser). They focused on their target audience and pulled off one of the best teasers I’ve ever seen.
