The Film
The best comedy of the year has finally arrived on DVD. The 40-Year-Old Virgin was one of the biggest surprise hits over the summer of 2005 and was well-recieved by both average moviegoers and critics alike. Steve Carell plays Andy Stitzer who all his life has had trouble finding the perfect woman. Over time Andy just stops trying and focuses his life on more important manners, like his action figure collection. His new found buddies David, Jay, and Cal (played by Paul Rudd, Romany Malco, and Seth Rogan respectively) try to find any girl for Andy to "get with," and lose him the label of being a 40-year-old virgin. While trying to find the "anything goes" girl Andy find the perfect woman for him in Trish (played by Catherine Keener). His friends suggest to find another girl to mess around with first, but Andy goes straight for his crown jewel and starts to date Trish. When the time comes Andy cannot go through with losing his virginity. Andy goes to drown his sorrows with some drinks and ends up meeting another girl at the bar. When he sees how overly sexual the girl is, he realizes he made a mistake leaving Trish. When reconciliated Trish makes the bold move of waiting until marriage for sex. When the big moment comes, the send-off for the movie is from way out of left field and ends up being one of the most enjoyable parts of the movie.
The DVD for the film is the unrated version. The uncut film seen on the DVD includes an extra 17 minutes, too raunchy for theatres. It lasts for a run time of 2 hours and 13 minutes. Universal does a great job with their DVDs, presenting this in Anamorphic Widescreen with an aspect ratio of 1.85:1. The sound quality is on par with the picture quality, with the film being presented with Dolby Digital 5.1 for English. Spanish and French audio is also avaliable, along with English, Spanish, and French subtitles.
Extras
There are extra raunchy bonus materials and behind-the-scenes looks at some scenes for fans who did not get enough from the unrated version of the film. There are six deleted scenes that for some odd reason were not thrown in with the other extra 17 minutes of the unrated film. Then there are extended takes for some of the film's most popular and hilarious scenes. Extended takes of the 'You Know How I Know You're Gay,' 'Andy's Fantasies,' and 'Cal & Paula,' are shown with commentary. There is also an extended cut of the scene 'Advice from Mooj,' and 'Date-A-Palooza,' without commentary tracks. Line-O-Rama is in the same line as these extras, showing alternate jokes from various scenes. There are also two behind-the-scenes featurettes with 'Waxing Doc,' a look at how the waxing scene was done, and 'My Dinner With Stormy,' which is an actual dinner between Seth Rogan (Cal) and porn-star Stormy Daniels, who was the woman in Andy's fantasies.
There is one commentary avaliable for viewers for the actual movie. The main commentators are Judd Apatow and Steve Carell, but also various members of the cast are featured throughout the commentary. Then there is the typical Gag Reel included which does have it's moments, but is nothing special.
The Verdict
The 40-Year-Old Virgin was the best comedy of 2005. The unrated version, while slowing down the pace of the movie, makes the feature even more hilarious and is a must have for the extra raunchy and amusing extended scenes on the Bonus Features. At it's heart the film is a romance story, but actually remains funny unlike the other comedy hit of the summer Wedding Crashers.
