Brannigan is a 1975 British action thriller film directed by Douglas Hickox and starring John Wayne and Richard Attenborough filmed in Panavision and DeLuxe Color. One of the screenwriters was Dalton Trumbo's son, Christopher Trumbo.

Set principally in London, the film is about a Chicago detective sent to Britain to organise the extradition of an American mobster, who is soon kidnapped and held for ransom. Struggling with the restrained policing style of his British counterparts, the tough Irish-American detective uses his own brand of law enforcement to recapture the criminal.

Post Re: Brannigan
This is the first John Wayne film I've seen, and I enjoyed it. It hangs on the coattails of Dirty Harry with Wayne playing renegade cop Jim Brannigan. Even in London he plays by his own rules, carries his piece, and generally acts American against the stiff upper lip of Scotland Yard. It's very well crafted with time given to ransom drop-offs and chases and what-not, where you can bathe in 70s Britain. The pub brawl is a tad ludicrous and it would have benefitted from being rated R, but generally it's a very entertaining film, particularly the Tower Bridge-culminating car chase and the following-the-money sequence. It was also nice to see a young Tony Robinson pop up in a small role.
