Re: Secret Headquarters
I can see why this didn't go to cinemas. It feels cheaply made and small-in-scale. The bulk of the movie takes place underground and/or in the dark, and the true superhero shots are cut short or obscured so as to, I guess, keep costs down. I really wanted more scenes of The Guard. Perhaps daylight scenes of him saving the day, but there's nothing. The focus of the movie is the kids and their problems, obviously such as finding the underground lair and escaping the bad guys but also things like plucking up courage to invite a girl to the Moon Dance. Beyond the modern day race quota system, the film also seems obsessed with forcing multicultural relationships. I guess this is the new normal, but it does not feel organic. It feels a few generations away and, thus, pushed upon us, which doesn't help the film be a better film. Owen Wilson is only in it at the beginning and for the final third. The characteristics of the suit and the powers aren't clear either, and the bad guys are pretty lame, trying simultaneously to be funny and villainous. All of this puts the film in the same bracket as Home Alone 3 or something, which as it's squarely for kids is fine but it underwhelmed me.
Interestingly, with this being Paramount (the same studio that reinstated the Taiwanese flag on Maverick's flight jacket) there is also a mention of Taiwan in the movie. Even acknowledging Taiwan exists seemed off limits in the past, but now it seems Paramount just doesn't care anymore. Good job, Paramount!
