This was one unfocused, mess of a film, but at least I was somewhat still entertained by it. Darren Lynn Bousman has always been a pretty capable director IMO, but this script was all over the place and its pretty much a random combination of past horror films who have done this same premise much better. Maggie Q and Luke Hemsworth are fine in there roles, but I never cared for there characters and you do get some decent bits of gore and creepy imagery.

Everything that makes Death of Me interesting or unique can be found in the first half hour, leaving another hour of standard creepy visions or portentous warnings. The whole situation of being stranded in a foreign locale as freaky things happen amongst increasingly unhelpful locals telegraphs the grand scheme way too much. It’s 2020 and those movies make up a subgenre all their own so if a filmmaker goes to that well they should mix it up and avoid such typical developments.

It never excels at creating the atmosphere or intrigue in characters that it is clearly needs you to care. I did like acting and some of the festival scenes were haunting and fun at the same time but other than that nothing works here and that predictable sequel ending was hilarious.
