Quote:
Holmes & Watson is a 2018 American mystery comedy film written and directed by Etan Cohen. The film stars Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly as the titular characters, Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, with Rebecca Hall, Rob Brydon, Steve Coogan, and Ralph Fiennes also starring. The plot follows the famed detective duo as they set out to solve who is behind a threat at Buckingham Palace.

First announced in 2008 with Sacha Baron Cohen set to play Holmes and Ferrell to play Watson, the film languished for several years before Ferrell and Reilly were confirmed in their final roles in July 2016, and Cohen was announced as director. Filming took place around London from late 2016 to early 2017. The film was released in the United States on December 25, 2018, by Sony Pictures Entertainment (through Columbia Pictures).

Post Re: Holmes & Watson
This is dreadful. What a sad result after a decade of development, near starts in production, etc. It has a core problem from which many other issues stem: it posits Holmes and Watson are renowned detectives (even enjoying a private audience with Queen Victoria) and utter, irredeemable buffoons who beat each other with bats, projectile vomit, etc. It is perhaps curious to criticize a low-brow comedy for a type of storytelling inconsistency, but this constantly frustrated me; it would be much more compelling to place credible versions of the characters in absurd situations.

There are myriad other flaws, too. I am a fan of Ferrell, but his performance is a preening, overbearing tragedy; one can almost see the sweat as he tries and tries and fails and fails to play this role effectively. John C. Reilly acquits himself with comparatively more aplomb, but he cannot save the dire material. The screenplay runs stale-to-begin-with gags (Holmes and Watson are bemused by the idea of a female doctor; Holmes is searching for a signature hat, considering a Stetson and a red "Make England Great Again" cap) into the ground, and it badly squanders an impressive supporting cast. For example, one of the greatest actors of his generation, Ralph Fiennes, is cast as as one of literature's most iconic antagonists, Professor Moriarty, and he is barely given five minutes of screen time (only 30 seconds of which represent the actual Moriarty as opposed to a doppelgänger).

Ugh.

This and the Happytime Murders are probably the most disappointing comedies this year. They seemed like such snowballs as far as concept, trailers. This doesn't hit quite those lows but its really low writing with everyone throwing everything they got at it. Probably would have been a great funny or die short. I think even Gene Wilder's film is better than this.

For a better Holmes-Watson comedy check Without A Clue from 1988 with Caine and Kingsley and Paul Freeman (Belloq in Raiders Of The Lost Ark) as Moriarty.

Yeah, this was pretty freaking bad. Too tired to go in-depth at the moment but I can't believe this was the best script that Ferrell and Reilly could find to be their next team-up. I hope they do another film more akin to Step Brothers in quality.

Ferrell and Reilly are trying but this movie is terrible. What a waste of time and/or money for all involved.
