Re: Bright
I enjoyed this. I guess I can understand why critics wouldn't be big on it, but it doesn't deserve the all out thrashing its been getting by certain reviewers. Ayer does put some effort into it, although I wish we got to explore the world he set up more and it would have helped had we gotten some kind of flashback or prologue to help establish the so called threat. The script definitely has issues, especially when it comes to how thinly written the characters are, but Smith and Edgerton have great chemistry and I liked Noomi Rapace as the villain even though she didn't do much besides kick a lot of ass. I could have done without the over the top characters though like the one Ike Barinholtz played and the gangster dude in the wheelchair.

I thought this was awesome. Great action-packed police chase thriller, reminding me of films like Judgement Night and Run All Night, but with orcs and elves and what-not. I was instantly into this world. It's also humorous in parts. I don't know, I just completely dug this film. Joel Edgerton is fantastic, and this is probably Noomi Rapace's best Hollywood role even if she barely does much - she's just a fucking bad ass. I can't wait for the sequel.

Re: Bright
The scorched-earth critical savaging is undeserved, but I am not a big fan of this film, either. It is...frustrating, interesting, odd, often at the same time. Broadly, I admire its left-field ambition and unbridled genre-blending lunacy, but from moment to moment and idea to idea—here's Édgar Ramírez in a Legolas wig as an elf FBI agent, there's orcs in football jerseys with yo-homes gangland swagger—I frequently found the world building a tad laughable. David Ayer is clearly more comfortable when a scene's focus is LAPD corruption and/or straight-ahead gunfire-and-foot-pursuit action (his long-established wheelhouses) versus the more outlandish and fey elements.
The project is definitely elevated, though, by the excellent Joel Edgerton. He infuses his role, the nation's first orc policeman, with genuine charisma and sensitivity and seems to relish the challenge of acting under such extensive makeup instead of allowing it to overwhelm him.

I enjoyed this. Good buddy cop action movie. Not sure why it is getting so much hate with critics.

Re: Bright
Perhaps some of the critics hate the fact that its a $100m Netflix non cinematic release. At least Okja and Meyrowitz hit the festival circuit before release.

Maybe also lingering resentment of Suicide Squad.

BRIGHT
I thought this film started off great. The comedy was spot on with Will Smith and Edgerton's orc cop. I liked the world building and seeing the factions of Elves, Orcs, the dragon in the skyline, the fairy. All of that was cool and interesting to me. I would have liked to have seen more of that world rather than being trapped in this chase plot. I did like the magical wand but I would also have liked to have seen more of the power of the wand. I mean, why would this elf give her weapon to another elf just to kill an elf when she needs that wand in order to bring back the Dark Lord. I would have liked to have seen some flashback of that being. Are they talking about Sauron or a version of it but instead we get bogged down in this chase. So it started off really good but kind of goes flat as the film goes along but I did enjoy watching it the one time.

Re: Bright
This honestly isn't that bad. Joel Edgerton was fantastic and elevated it a lot, but the movie was fairly exciting and had decent action sequences. Will Smith was solid too. Lucy Fry and Noomi Rapace were pretty bad and it does start to drag near the end but it was far better than I was expecting. B
I saw this theatrically, by the way. It's playing at a theater near my apartment (I guess one of the few in the country that Netflix is screening it at).

Re: Bright
Just caught this on Netflix and while I like the genre blending its not executed very well and overall its neither a good buddy-cop movie nor a good fantasy movie. The Dark Lord wasn't explained at all and the past is just mentioned a couple of times but never explored. Most of the movie is not a chase but a survival movie so there is no mystery there even when (the most obvious) riddles are presented at the start of the movie. The concept of Light and emerging Dark Lord from the pool is completely undercooked. Smith and Edgerton play each other well but its later who comes out the better of the two, giving everything to this role. It was still fun to watch once but this is a lost potential.
