Wonderstruck really should have be titled Dumbstruck, and no, not because the film is stupid, but rather in the literal meaning of the word as an exact description of the story. But while the story is in no way unintelligent, it is tediously told - it never achieves its titular sense of wonder. There's certainly no arguing that this isn't a beautifully art-directed reverie on the 20's and 70's. Hayne's courage in creating what is essentially a silent movie in 2017 is inspired given the subject. But I just can't help mourning for the fact that Wonderstruck isn't a much better movie. *C*

It's very good. I didn't love it as much as I admired it, but the cast was universally great - particularly the young actors - and it's gorgeous to look at. The final few scenes are incredibly moving. B+
