 Re: Ghost in the Shell
It has a visual flair and the atmosphere is all correct but the journey is slow and the end result is neither inspiring or dramatic as the manga/series. SJo is great in it and all the Japanese cast is decent but none that stands out.

... meh. Visually it looks great, special effects are good... even the acting is decent. Overall it's just not an interesting film sadly, and the action is very sparse.

Re: Ghost in the Shell (2017)
A solid science-fiction action film. I love, love, love the aesthetic (one of those futuristic films where cities are built on cities and bathed in neon with giant holographic fish circling skyscrapers), which considerably buoyed my enjoyment, without a doubt. And Scarlett Johansson and personal favorite Michael Pitt—or Michael Carmen Pitt as he is now credited, because he needed to be just a tad more aloof and difficult—lend gravitas to their characters' where-does-our-artificiality-end-and-our-latent-humanity-begin? crises. It is, I admit, slightly inert in regard to whom we should root for and against (the Evil Corporation is just...there, almost malevolent by default without any truly, memorably sinister or vile characteristics), but I have no other particularly significant complaints. The singular, hard-as-nails presence of "Beat" Takeshi Kitano is a very cool flourish in and of itself.

P. S. Space Princess did not post a spoiler, but rather a long list of z's (of the snoring variety), which warped the entire thread's dimensions. Hence the spoiler tag.

Re: Ghost in the Shell (2017)
Have to side with the reviews on this. This movie is often stunning to look at, but as ambitious as it is technically, it tends to fall flat from a narrative standpoint. ScarJo is OK but pretty vacant. Which I guess makes sense considering the character, but...

I know that scene is from the anime, but Major against that tank or whatever felt so anticlimactic.

Re: Ghost in the Shell (2017)
Ghost in the Shell offers a good Pinocchio story set in beautifully rendered future city with well cast actors. I have never read the original manga nor ever seen the old anime - I enjoyed my first visit to this world. Although it was a bit disappointing to see Hong Kong stand in for the Japanese city of Niihama (especially not making the effort to disguise the street level Chinese language signs), the set design and city cgi effects were outstanding in the IMAX format I viewed it in. Scarlett Johanssen does an excellent job of portraying the narrow emotional range of Major Motoko and I enjoyed the supporting work of Pilou Asbæk and "Beat" Takeshi Kitano as her Section 9 colleagues. I'm somewhat surprised that a work with a reputation as renowned as this, didn't dig deeper into the existential questions it raises, but by the end I was still captivated by Major's internal odyssey. *A-*

Re: Ghost in the Shell (2017)
Such a huge waste of potential IMO. It has the stunning visuals and the right cast, but the story is dull as fuck and the action sequences are so generic. The one standout scene is that bit in that gritty looking parking lot with Takeshi Kitano. He was pretty badass in this, but their weren't enough scenes like that. Scarlett was ok, but very monotone and boring as the lead, however I really did like the dude who played Batou. Also, Michael Pitt should be in more movies, because he is still a very solid actor and even though he isn't given much to do here I easily found his character the most interesting.

Re: Ghost in the Shell (2017)
Ghost in the Shell is mostly a missed opportunity unfortunately. The sci-fi world on the big screen is pretty amazing, it's got a great futuristic feel and is supported by excellent special effects. Scarlett Johannson is also very good in the lead as is Pilou Asbæk in the supporting Batou role. But then it's negatives, the cinematography and score are only just passable and for a highly visual film I feel these are points that need to stand out. The crime of the film is it's script though, what a pretty fucking terrible narrative. It comes together as a mess of bits and pieces I didn't feel a bond with all the way through sadly. The more veteran actors disappoint too, Binoche seems to have no range in this whatsover and Peter Ferdinando comes across as a B-movie actor (he's one I guess) and feels very misplaced. Beyond some of the positives the end result of the film is unfortunately a shame. Glad it's doing poorly at the box office, it doesn't deserve a sequel. It did pique my interest in the source material and I'm giddy to learn about that now.

Ghost in the Shell
It was average. It actually reminded me of a mix between Judge Dredd, Blade Runner, and Robocop. Besides a few beautiful Clint Mansell compositions and some nicely captured cinematography, there wasn't much to it. It feels very much like it is treading old ground. The film's biggest flaw is Scarlett Johansson, who is entirely miscast. She is too short, too wide on the hips, and too rounded in the shoulder to portray and move like a nimble, Asian cyborg. It feels like such a basic transition from animation to live-action, without much desire to perfect the story for live-action.

I disagree on Johansson though, definitely her height was not an issue and I didn't find her anywhere noticeably curvy to affect the character's abilities either. Who would you have cast? I think Johansson both looked and performed great in this, that I can't think of anyone who could have done better.
