Post Re: Journey to the West: The Demons Strike Back
I enjoyed the film quite a bit. It's a fantasy film based on old Chinese tale, but due to the nature of the film it feels more mystical than ancient in any way. I saw Journey to the West back in 2013 in the cinema and I liked that too, but felt it went off track a bit towards the end. The Demons Strike Back summons some of that same fate. The first 2/3's of the film are really good, unfortunately it ends on a bit of an uninteresting note like the first film did as well, but I didn't find it as glaring.
Shu Qi's presence and character in the first film is what mostly made it interesting and I was a bit skeptical how this second film would fare without her. Those doubts quickly vanished as the film directly puts a lot of magic spectacle on the screen with an excellent 3D, what rounds it off is a good score and the right dose of humor that continue throughout. The Monk reprises his role as the lead and while he's fine, it's the Monkey King who's has the best parts of the film as his sidekick disciple. There's another flurry of Chinese actors and actresses in this who don't disappoint either. Lastly, it's comedy in the after credits scene hits the right mark too.

Kind of by chance, I saw the film for a second time today. Nothing new to add really, it remains a visual spectacle that's only undone by a finale which doesn't keep my interest as much as the first parts.

Journey to the West: The Demons Strike Back

In this sequel to 2013's Journey to the West: Conquering Demons (which I did not see), legendary Hong Kong action-director, Tsui Hark (Once Upon A Time in China trilogy), takes over the reins from Stephen Chow (Kung Fu Hustle, The Mermaid), this time settling for a producer-writer credit. This fantastical comedy set in ancient mythical China is the story of a Buddha and his disciples; Monkey King, Piggy, and a fish man beast, who are on a mission [supposedly] to the west but along the way encounter demons. That's it in a nutshell. Quite simply, the film is garbage. The final third is bearable purely for the sheer grandiose simplicity of it and my anticipation for the rolling of credits, but overall the film a 108-minute cultural bombardment of over-the-top fantasy, silly humour, stupid characters, outdated stylistic choices, unneeded 3D, and shoddy visual effects, all patched together with performers that are stars, not actors. The themes and styles are quintessentially TV-level Chinese. Besides the stunning and delicate beauty of Jelly Lin as a replacement love interest for the first film's Shu Qi, everything in this film is a waste of time.

I'm angry at myself for somehow selecting the wrong film to see (had intended to see Jackie Chan's latest, Kung Fu Yoga). Even the subtitles were shit (I spotted "coulda" in the English translation).

Yeah, though I hated it in a different way than I hated Independence Day: Resurgence. This is a film that I never intended to see, don't have any interest in, and only saw because I fucked up. Nothing from this film appealed to me. Not the trailers, not the posters, not even the title. But I somehow saw it, so the F was sort of inevitable. With Resurgence, they so easily could have made a good film. The story is one that we've seen before but one that I am still up for if they can make a good one.

Apparently, the film is also known as Journey to the West: Demon Chapter.

And stuffp, I suggest you use Mtime for user ratings of Chinese films. DianPing is a ticket purchasing site, so the algorithm is surely not as honest as it should be. I think Mtime also sells tickets but is used more as an entertainment news site. Anyway, its score on Mtime is 6.7, unlike the 8.8 on DianPing (if I remember correctly). Other Mtime ratings; Arrival 7.7, Passengers 7.7, Buddies in India 5.6, Kung Fu Yoga 6.6.

Jelly Lin is nice :wub2:

And yeah, I never took the ratings on dianping too serious, just use that as a this film is preferred over that one. Mtime seems alright, I'm not familiar with it, but guess its a bit like a Chinese imdb I imagine.
