Post Re: The Hollars
Eh. This feels like a retread of every other Sundance coming-of-age indie that has come before, and also is vastly, vastly inferior to this year's similarly themed and wonderful Other People. It's ultimately too short and slight to make much of an emotional impression, it relies too heavily on the use of an indie soundtrack, and a good number of the characters are cartoonish and unlikable (I hated the dad, the brother, the nurse and the ex-girlfriend). The cast is fantastic and filled to the brim with great actors but they are not really used as well as they could be. The only actors who really stand out are John Krasinski, who continues to be incredibly charming onscreen, Anna Kendrick, who does the most with an underwritten sympathetic girlfriend role, and Margo Martindale, whose performance deserves a better film. It's harmless but that's what undoes it in the end - it's way too forgettable to be categorized as anything more than ordinary. C
