Its not a brilliant movie but the cast does really well specially Swinton with her mute character does more than any other cast does while speaking. Fiennes does a good job being an irritating and pushy character but he fails to connect emotionally because the script doesn't allow the character any room for that. Schonaerts and Johnson provide really good supporting hands but the later has very little to do other than drinking and seducing. Schonaerts is the only character in the film that is given the most breathing space and he nearly pulls it off but you cannot take your eyes away from Swinton and Fiennes's amazing turns.

The film is beautifully shot and the backdrops are breath-taking along with all the nudity going around. You see a whole lot of these sexy actors in the movie as soon as 2 minutes in the movie ;)

5/10 B

I am surprised to know that Swinton chose the character to be mute because apparently in the original script she wasn't mute. Not saying that she wouldn't have been great otherwise but going mute was the best decision.

Loved this! It's a dreamily sensuous, erotic, delightfully soapy couple of hours of beautiful people not saying things to each other (and in the case of Ralph Fiennes' character, saying way too much). It's grounded by four mostly excellent performances. Fiennes is on fire here; he has never given such a wired, energetic performance. Tilda Swinton dives deep in yet another example of her chameleon like persona. Dakota Johnson improves on the promise she has showed in past roles with a seductive, coyly engaging interpretation. While Matthias Schoenaerts is drop dead gorgeous and fits in well with the sun-kissed scenery, he may have underplayed his role a bit too much. It's a movie that instantly intrigues you and wanting more. A-

Post Re: A Bigger Splash
On a remote island nestled between Sicily and Tunisia, a veteran rock-and-roll star (Tilda Swinton) is vacationing with her lover, a photographer and documentarian (Matthias Schoenaerts), while her strained vocal cords recover. Their idyll is abruptly torn asunder by a surprise visit from her former partner, a record producer (Ralph Fiennes), and his adult daughter (Dakota Johnson). The four are thrust into a rapidly escalating maelstrom of desire, jealousy, and suspicion. This year and in the past, the term "summer movie" conjures images of animated sequels and clashing superheroes, but, in its own way, A Bigger Splash is a top-notch summer movie. It is a sexy and stylish tailspin of a melodrama fueled by sumptuous photography, movie-star magnetism, and dynamic music. Every element comes together when the Fiennes character brashly, flamboyantly dances to the Rolling Stones' "Emotional Rescue" in what is sure to be one of the year's most entertaining scenes. The film is full of such zesty, stadium-sized beats, and their cumulative power overcomes a few moments of structural and/or tonal confusion.

B+

P. S. I am not sure I entirely understand the significance of the Dakota Johnson character being underage and fluent in Italian. Are we meant to read into this in a, "Is she who she says she is?" way? Or is she just being bitchy/secretive?
