Solace

A pretty effective thriller. Hopkins is great as usual, Farrell is dark and mysterious, though used sparingly, and Jeffrey Dean Bardem is cool - it's not his fault that he chose a profession that he's kind of no good at! Abbie Cornish, as hot as she is, was just terrible. And it was nice to see Janine Turner for the first time since Cliffhanger. The film is cool and has style, and apart from a few either unexplained gaps or motives (most notably; why would Farrell reveal himself to Hopkins in the diner if he could see the future and know he was going to die as a direct result of the meet), it was engaging and fun.

He wanted Hopkins to kill him, he was terminally ill himself, and saw Hopkins as the most suitable person to carry on his work.

I liked it. Despite an very overdirected effort from Poyart the film stands firm with good performances from the cast, and an interesting to follow serial killer case. I was totally pleased with Cornish as well, whom I wasn't really familiar with before; dig her. The film doesn't feel very original, with Hopkins as the adviser in a serial killer film, Silence of the Lambs quickly comes to mind. Precognition has been done before and better in Minorty Report (also with Farrell). It boils down to becoming average, all the way through the editing, but it's the cast, Farrell, Hopkins, Dean Morgan are all good, that made it a worthwhile watch for me.

Ah I see. Must have missed that.

This was terrible. Dull, dreary and filled to the brim with uninteresting stock characters. It feels like an episode of a bad crime procedural and Anthony Hopkins seems bored out of his mind as the lead. Colin Farrell is solid as the main villain but shows up way too late to save this thing. The central concept is also executed in a poor and annoying way (the "visions" the main character has). No wonder this has been on the shelf for so long. D+
