Quote:
Hard Eight is a 1996 American neo-noir crime thriller film written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, starring Philip Baker Hall, John C. Reilly, Gwyneth Paltrow and Samuel L. Jackson. There are also brief appearances by Robert Ridgely, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Melora Walters.

The film, originally titled Sydney, was Anderson's first feature; Hall, Reilly, Ridgely, Hoffman and Walters acted in Anderson's subsequent films. It was screened in the Un Certain Regard section at the 1996 Cannes Film Festival. The film was expanded from the principal idea of Anderson's short film Cigarettes & Coffee (1993).

A good and solid film. It isn't a particularly interesting story, but the actors deliver and it's well told. I didn't realize it was PTA's first feature, and as far as the result goes you wouldn't tell. It's just a well made film all around, although it lacks any spectacle, it's all about the dialogue and slow unveiling of the different characters' stories. It's quite artistic, and any PTA is sure to like it.
