Felon is a cool and well-thought prison drama. Dorff and Kilmer put on some great performances, in this solid movie, that's low-key but made with care. The who and what of going to prison, and what the lead endures were very engaging for me, and I found it gripping.

Re: Felon (2008)
This is a really great prison film, and it's not such an easy thing to do. For every good one, you have three bad ones. For every Lock Up, there is an A Prophet, Starred Up, and Escape Plan 2: Hades. Thankfully Felon shares more with Lock Up. The film manages to make you care for the protagonist and his situation, and the cast is delightfully old-school too. Val Kilmer, Nick Chinlund, Sam Shepard, and obviously Dorff. It's one of those films that surprises. It looks DTV by the cover, but it's well made and engaging, and everything works out for the best.

Glad you liked this, I wrote my review ages after I've seen it, and I think it should actually be a B+ for me.
Suggest you see Shot Caller too if you liked this.

Re: Felon (2008)
Yeah this is still Ric Roman Waugh's best film IMO, although I did enjoy Snitch and Shot Caller. I do love how gritty and realistic this film felt at times, and overall its just a brutal and gripping experience throughout with really solid performances from Dorff and Kilmer and a pretty memorable villain performance from Harold Perrineau.
