Post Re: Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck
An exciting and extremely intimate documentary exploring the artistic and personal development of Nirvana guitarist and vocalist Kurt Cobain, drawing on a vast collection of diary entries, drawings, home videos, etc., many donated by executive producer Frances Bean Cobain. The content is presented numerous ways, including rapid-fire montages (life on tour) and animated sequences (to vividly illustrate memories Cobain put to paper). The meteoric-then-tragic Nirvana story is one of contemporary popular music's most widely known, so the film, assuming at least a basic familiarity among its viewership, primarily focuses on mood, personality, and the anecdotal, which I found rewarding and poignant. Director Brett Morgen regards his subject warmly, but does not turn a blind eye to veins of hypocrisy or instances of juvenile self-indulgence. Any Cobain biography or reflection will prove divisive among hardcore devotees and cynical naysayers, of course: they do not mention the fact Courtney Love clearly murdered him! Too much is said and shown (no privacy)! Not enough is said (explain the suicide)! He was the most perfect human being to ever draw breath, and nothing can capture his spirit! He just navel-gazed and screamed! And so on and so forth. But, in my opinion, the film is clearly worthy: atmospheric, enigmatic, tough, and stylish in a way consistent with the Nirvana aesthetic.
