Quote:
Lost in Translation is a 2003 American film starring Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson and directed by Sofia Coppola; it was Coppola's second feature film, after The Virgin Suicides (1999). The film blends elements of comedy as well as more serious themes common in drama films. Upon release, the film was a major critical success, and went on to be nominated for four Academy Awards, including: Best Picture, Best Actor for Bill Murray, and Best Director for Sofia Coppola; Coppola won for Best Original Screenplay.

In the film, an aging actor named Bob Harris (Bill Murray) and a recent college graduate named Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson) develop a unique closeness after a chance meeting in a grand Tokyo hotel. The movie explores themes of loneliness, alienation, insomnia, existential ennui, and culture shock against the backdrop of a modern Japanese cityscape.

While the cinematography was excellent and the first half was great, it sunk hard after about 40 minutes and became a little boring. It did have some nice funny moments, and the acting is good. But in the end, IMO, it left alot to be desired of.

Another film I caught on a plane off somewhere!

I thought this film was over-rated and a real snore! It didn't appeal to me at all! :(

A great film the first time you see it, but once you pop it in your DVD player, it becomes very boring. However, it's still a very well made film.

B+ down from an A+ the first time I saw it.

It was a good movie. Just good. I understood it just fine. I just thought it was average and a little over-rated.

What a wonderful, wonderful film. So packed with true emotions. I haven't seen a movie in a long time that flies by like this one. I didn't want to end it. The humour is good, but it is the relationship between Murray and Johansson that carries this movie. A rare masterpiece. (A+)

I rewatched this twice last week and it still hasn't lost what made the movie wonderful. Lovely film, one of my all time favorites.

I loved it the first time I watched it, but this film has terrible rewatchability value. The setting of Tokyo was just breathtaking, and very well used. It's an interesting character study, but nothing more.

I somehow think this has great rewatchability value. I love it more and more each time...

It helps if you're obsessed with Scarlett Johansson, though.

It's a sweet, small film. I can see where you're coming from if you call it overrated (same with those who say that My Big Fat Greek Wedding is overrated), but, like with Greek Wedding, I saw it pretty early on in '03 and didn't have any pre-decided expectations that had to be met. I was suprised that the film, which takes a while to take off, got more interesting with each minute.

My favorite of '03. A

One of the best movies of 2003, maybe in my top 3 for the year. As an American in Japan, I totally understand the culture shock and sense of isolation experienced by the two lead characters. Bill Murray is wonderful in the role of a lifetime and gives my favorite performance by an actor from 2003. The only part that didn't really seem to fit was the segment where they are out running around Tokyo in the night. It just didn't seem to 'flow' with the rest of the movie.

I really had to comment on this after I just returned from a 3-day trip to Tokyo. My grade: A-.

I'm not going to comment in this thread...

because ive nothing important to add and i'm pretty sure it's known how i feel.

instead, i will just say, anyone who says "overrated," "boring," or "no replay value" is insane...

Warning: if you have read the stacks of glowing reviews for this movie - don't be fooled! This is an ultra-character study devoid of plot or story. And the aforementioned characters are the (stereo?)typical "ugly" Americans, this time in Asia and depressed. It was almost impossible to feel any empathy towards these two 'losers' in translation...
If you really must see it, perhaps your best strategy would be to leave after the first half hour, in which Bill Murray does get a couple of brief funny deadpan scenes reacting to the commercial director and 'stockings' woman. After that it's a slow spiral down the drain. Very disappointing sophomore effort for Sofia Coppola, after the very good Virgin Suicides...

1 out of 5.

i feel exactly the same as you, the first hour was great and then everything was boring as hell!. To slow for my taste, but great performances.

I want to go to Tokio

I love this movie, my favorite movie of the 2000s so far. I disagree with the rewatchability aspect, I bought the DVD and popped it in and was as transfixed with it as I was the first time I saw it. It's a simple story about two lonely souls unexpectedly connecting, and everything about it rings true. Still resonates with me after a couple years, can't say the same for most movies I see. grade - A

One of my least favorite movies ever.

Plotless, pointless, boring. Characters aren't even interesting, they're just... average people. Bill Murray + Scarlett Johannson walking around in a hotel for 2 hours doing nothing, and that's the most critically acclaimed movie of this decade? Fuck you. I like stories, I like movies that get me excited, I like being interested... Lost In Translation is a deadpan piece of crap.
