Not bad. The trailers I've seen didn't really sell the film very well, in my opinion, so it ended up being a pleasant surprise. B-

Re: The Book of Life (2014)
Wow, this movie was surprisingly very good. It had a very good story and beautiful visuals, even though the style took a while to get used to. There are some tropes here that are retrodden from other animated movies, but they don't bring it down too much. The main issue here is that the filmmakers are not interested in appealing to anyone apart from the lowest common denominator, so in between all of the awesome stuff, there is childish humor and potty jokes. In fact, the entire real world sequences fall victim to this. When he goes to the Land of the dead, the film becomes much smarter and much more interesting. The main characters were a little bland, but they were easy to root for. I'm reminded of Hotel Transylvania, which also had a decent story and premise, but was not made for anyone other than the kiddies. Overall, this should have also gotten an Oscar nomination over the boring, shitty Boxtrolls.
