The War of the Roses
The War of the RosesQuote: The War of the Roses is a 1989 American black comedy film based upon the 1981 novel The War of the Roses by Warren Adler. The film follows a wealthy couple with a seemingly perfect marriage. When their marriage begins to fall apart, material possessions become the center of an outrageous and bitter divorce battle.
This is the third film to co-star Michael Douglas, Kathleen Turner, and Danny DeVito, after Romancing the Stone and its sequel, The Jewel of the Nile. DeVito directed the film, which also had producer James L. Brooks and actor Dan Castellaneta working on a project outside of The Simpsons. The opening title sequence was created by Saul Bass.
In both the novel and the film, the married couple's family name is Rose, and the title is an allusion to the battles between the Houses of York and Lancaster at the end of the Middle Ages.

Re: The War of the Roses
Wonderful film. Douglas and Turner are both in top form and have a perfectly savage chemistry. And behind the camera, Danny DeVito truly creates a dark comedy, which is to say I admire how the film ventures to places of real and toxic pain without sacrificing a certain whimsy and spring in its step. Both poles (the anger of the characters and the humor of the piece) are always intertwined and complementary.

The War of the Roses
I watched this when I was younger with my mum. It's one of her favourites, and it always held a special place in my heart too. I suppose it's one of those things that me and my mum shared. There weren't many, so I cherished this. I just watched it again and I appreciate it all over again. It's a masterpiece in the sub-genre of domestic and marital breakups. American Beauty, The Break-Up, the remake of Mr. and Mrs. Smith etc., while not fully alike, all owe a debt to this film.
There is no more perfect a human being than Michael Douglas to play "Mr. Successful". Utterly brilliant. And Kathleen Turner is such a cunning bitch, and kind of sexy too, just before she turned into a man. She masters the spitefulness of a woman flawlessly. It's a classic dark comedy and one of my favourite films ever. The script is just magical. I was laughing literally every few minutes. It's hilarious, surprising, crude, sexy, cynical, and its even artistic, told in a sort of glass ball type late-night conversation with a friend, yet it's a client instead. Really great cinema, and I wish Danny DeVito still made films like this.

I need to see this.
Its incredible to think that Kathleen Turner was reasonably hot back then. Now we are scarred with images of her as Chandler Bing's dad.
