 Masters of the Universe Masters of the Universe Quote: Masters of the Universe is a 1987 American science fantasy film directed by Gary Goddard and based on the Mattel toy line of the same name. The film stars Dolph Lundgren and Frank Langella, alongside Jon Cypher, Chelsea Field, Billy Barty, and Courteney Cox.
The film was released theatrically in the United States on August 7, 1987 and was a critical and commercial failure.

This was a childhood favourite of mine. Very enjoyable and atmospheric. Dolph does well as He-Man and Courteney Cox is hot with her 80s perm. The film’s style was clearly trying to emulate Star Wars in story, scope, and music, and especially lots of the production techniques, but even though it has around 10 years on it, I don’t think it betters the 1977 space opera. Although I do prefer it. Frank Langella is awesome as Skeletor. It’s great fun for kids and I am still a bit surprised that it didn’t perform better back in 1987.
