 Re: Tammy
It'd be the worst movie of the year if it weren't for The Other Woman, and just like in that film, Tammy features a leading female who is trying her damnedest to wring every laugh possible out of this piece of shit. Mann was at least likable in her film. McCarthy is not. I don't know how anyone is supposed to like her, both in the film and the audience watching it. We rarely sympathize with her (I have no idea how Mark Duplass' character is supposed to fall in love with her aside from the script saying so, and don't get me started on that whole subplot involving his father), and when we do, its at the sake of cheap scene where Susan Sarandon (as her grandmother because that makes sense) takes pot shots at her weight and repeatedly calls her cheeseburger - you know, as I typed that I actually kind of chuckled, but not because it's funny in the film, but because its just funny to write that someone called another person cheeseburger - and embarrasses her in front of a bunch of lesbians having a Fourth of July cookout. Why in front of a bunch of lesbians at a fourth of July cookout? Cause that's a funny setting. Old lesbians. Funny. The first ten minutes are kind of good, and the robbery scene that's featured in all of the TV spots is funny (once we get past her slow-motion walk in the parking lot), but I don't think I laughed again anywhere else in the film. And this wouldn't be such a disaster except that it's a vanity project for both McCarthy and her husband Falcone. They co-wrote the film together and he directed it. That should never happen again. And what do they have on the cast that appeared in the film? Look at that cast list. It's not too shabby. Did they even bother to read the script, or did they just blindly trust McCarthy? And Toni Collette basically has a glorified cameo. She has what, two lines? Also, the whole jet-ski thing didn't make any sense. She needs $1600 (or $1400, I forget) to bail her grandmother out of jail. Did she completely forget that she had a jet-ski attached to her car? First, it makes for a dumb getaway car (which the film addresses), but she couldn't pawn it off to someone. I know they throw in a line later that it was trashed, but if it cost them $4800, someone couldn't have taken it for a third of that? But instead her first instinct is to rob a drive-thru chain that she used to work at in another state? I know she's supposed to be dumb, lazy, etc. (as Kathy Bates' character tells her directly to her face in a very uncomfortable scene), but really? It stinks. (D-)

 Re: Tammy
It's just really boring. I, mostly, enjoy Melissa McCarthy, but she was quite bland here and it felt like I've seen her character dozens of times before.
The robbery scene (including returning the money and a few leftover pies) was indeed the highlight of the film. Tammy's and Kathy Bates (Loren I think) reaction to Pearl not actually being dead was kinda funny, too. But two mildly funny scenes certainly isn't enough to save this one. D+.
What happened to strip club scene advertised in the trailers/spots? It's odd the scene was cut despite it being featured so much in the marketing.

 Re: Tammy
As a Melissa McCarthy fan, I regret I must agree with the consensus so far. Tammy isn't just lame, it's actively terrible. There are exactly two funny moments in the film (the robbery all over the ads being one of them), and everything else is a long, painful slog through teeth gnashing. And it's almost criminal how this movie has so many terrific actors in it and wastes them all egregiously. I hope if McCarthy and Ben Falcone work on another movie like this again, they learn from this one. D

 Re: Tammy
What is this I'm hearing about this turning into a straight drama midway through? Is that accurate?

Yeah I hear it's not the laugh-riot people are wanting and is more serious. I hope I like it. I love McCarthy. The positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes sound good .

 Re: Tammy
I get people finding it bad, but I thought it was fairly enjoyable. Some of the humor misses, especially in the beginning, but there are funny parts and it has its heart in the right place.
7/10 ( B )

 Re: Tammy
The trailers for this looked terrible, but my low expectations were slightly exceeded. It's not a good film by any stretch, but it is mildly enjoyable. A few good jokes here and there. Even though the characters are really terrible.

7/10 ( B ) I think a 7/10 is a C-. His 8/10 is a B+. People have different ratings. His 5/10 doesn't have to be an F like it would be in school. I know you're still in high school, but you need to free your mind.

 Re: Tammy
I thought this was fine, it's a film that works because the role is just written for McCarthy, her loud humor is funny sometimes. It's also dumb and silly at other times and the dramatic moments don't work. Sarandon helps the film too in her role as the liberal grandma, and that's also where the film stops to have anything going for it. It's average ultimately, Tammy is just not a likable lead, but the film has some amusing moments.
