RED 2

After watching this I'm not sure how much I really liked the first Red. They bring back the familiars but it just wasn't as exciting as I thought it might be. There are some nice action moments in the film but a couple or more are just over the top. Now, I really liked anything to do with Helen Mirren's character. Who doesn't like to see a old hottie kick butt? The girl from Weeds just doesn't work for me. I thought her character was very annoying. She's a bit like Cameron Diaz in Knight and Day. Overall, it was a decent but forgettable sequel.

Grade - B

More of the same, audience seemed to like it a lot. Should have decent legs. I think it lacks Morgan Freeman and Urban was a more menacing foil with so many resources. Hopkins and Jones were fun additions and everyone else is great again. Overall I think if you liked the first, you won't be disappointed, but it is a slight step down in quality.

B+

Red 2 was lots of fun - - it's like The Expendables with brains.

Everyone seems to be having a great time and the action and humor are spot on. I wish they could still make a James Bond movie with a tenth as much charm as this little delight.

12 out of 5.

Had as much fun with this as the original. The film is ridiculous with some of its action and plotlines but the film realizes this and it makes the experience so much more enjoyable. Hopefully a third can be squeezed out sometime in the future.

RED2

This movie suffers from a lack of humour but not a lack of trying. The story is a mess, and concentration on action/comedy evaporates any goodwill this movie had from the first. Mary-Louise Parker becomes one of the most iritating actresses with her stupid portrayal of Sarah. Bruce is fast becoming the new Cage; throwing himself into project after project, and this time he's hit a turd. Malkovich is likeable, Mirren is great, Byung-hun can only pull one face, Zeta Jones was forgettable, and Hopkins seems like he had a ball.

Not even close to the first, which treaded the fine line between ridiculousness and interesting espionage comedy. RED2, however, seems proud to fall into the former and stay there until the cliched ending. It is hard to give a film with this much joviality a really bad grade, so..

The pacing is quite off too.

I enjoyed it a lot. It is only slightly worse than the first, simply because it doesn't feel as fresh and it is missing Morgan Freeman. However, Anthony Hopkins, in one of the most fun roles he has played over the past ten years or so, is a great substitute and John Malkovich still frequently steals the show. The action is well-done. The only miss here is Catherine Zeta-Jones who is completely wasted. It is a sillier movie than the first, but barely less entertaining. I see rewatching it again and again (as with the first one) in the future. Too bad that we'll most likely be deprived of another follow-up.
