Quote:
Quartet is a 2012 British comedy-drama film based on the play of the same title by Ronald Harwood, which ran in London's West End from 1999 - 2000.

The film stars Maggie Smith, Tom Courtenay, Billy Connolly and Pauline Collins as retired opera singers who annually put on a concert to celebrate Verdi's birthday, however the arrival of Jean (Smith) disrupts the equilibrium. It was filmed in its entirety at Hedsor House, Buckinghamshire in autumn 2011. The film is actor Dustin Hoffman's directorial debut.

It's slight, but enjoyable. Billy Connolly runs away with the film (as expected). Dustin Hoffman proves to be just as bland a director as actor in his old age. At least he makes the smart decision not to show the actors lip synching to opera recordings.

It's nothing special, but I liked it.

I wanna see it...this old-people-movies is quite a trend now. The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, Amour, Quartet and Song for Marion (seen that today, terrific film too).

Quartet is a very nicely done movie on the subject of old age. Sure it's not rocket science, but I thought director Dustin Hoffman maintained a very British-style comic tone to the proceedings which could easily have descended into the maudlin.

Further, the story was very clever - - in any other profession, the audience would not have been able to share in the "memories" of the characters as they are able to do here, where the memories are about famous works of opera.

6 out of 5.

The credits showing the supporting actors who were primarily professional musicians in their prime was a lovely touch, even though I only recognized one, a non-musician - - Andrew Sachs (Manuel of Fawlty Towers fame)...
