Interesting. Sad. It's in line with several recent films which focus on personal transformations during extreme, cosmic scenarios, including Children of Men, Another Earth, and Melancholia. As with those films, the science fiction elements are a metaphor, a way to investigate the human condition, so those in search of detailed answers ("Forget these characters! Why can't they have babies in the future? Was it the Muslims?") should steer well clear. Set in overcast Scotland, this film imagines a scenario in which the world's population loses its five senses, one by one. Two fractured souls, played by Ewan McGregor (as a chef) and Eva Green (a scientist), fall in love as these sinister events transpire and the world descends into violence and despair. Just 90 minutes long, the film is more interested in small moments of atmosphere and tender feeling than intricate storytelling and character development. Several of those small moments connect, though, and capture a potent sense of majesty and despondency without being too manipulative or sentimental. There is a crisp and elegant craftsmanship at play here. And the lead performances are strong. McGregor and Green share a fresh, sexy chemistry. The film, low-key and thoughtful, is worthy of consideration.

B+

Pretty much agreed with David, including the rating.

Depressing ending too. Realistically, the mankind should go extinct pretty soon after the film's finale.

The ending is almost frustrating. :P In an effective way. Imagining what the characters must be experiencing as their final sense vanishes is...harrowing.

I wonder who the narrator is. Is it just the "film's voice"? Or a survivor and therefore an indication humanity goes on?

Actually, if you pay close attention, they are left with one final (perfect?) sense - the sense of touch. That never goes away.

Oh, right.

(Until it, too, goes in the sequel.)
