Quote:
Anastasia is a 1997 American animated musical adventure film produced and directed by Don Bluth and Gary Goldman. It was the first feature film to be released by Fox Animation Studios.

The idea for the film originates from Fox's 1956 live-action film version of the same name. The plot is loosely based on an urban legend which claimed that Anastasia, the youngest daughter of the last monarch of Imperial Russia, in fact survived the execution of her family, and thus takes various liberties with historical fact.

I love Anastasia - - way underrated animated film!

Great voice work, great soundtrack, old school animation - - this one got tragically overlooked in it's first run. :(

60 out of 5.

Spoiler: show

(It's sad that the "end" of traditional animation also practically ended the career of Don Bluth and the output of Fox Animation Studios (though it did reappear with Fantastic Mr. Fox).)

It's funny how all of my friends from every place I've lived always think this is a Disney movie.

How is that funny? If you don't know any better, it's the most reasonable assumption.

Everybody involved went out of their way to make it look, feel and sell like a Disney movie. Mission accomplished!

This was pretty good, but it definitely suffered from Anastasia being badly voiced and portrayed. I never once could feel for her. And the "Journey to the Past" song is definitely the worst in the film. Oscar mom should have gone to literally any other song in the film. It doesn't nail the Disney formula as well as The Prince of Egypt, but it's close.

B+

Better than a great many of Disney efforts. I have listened to "Once upon a December" a lot around this time of year ever since. It's roughly the equivalent of how "Let it Go" stands out in Frozen. Not sure how well it lines up with History. The main guy is a little douchey, but it doesn't ruin the movie. In retrospect, I wish the Rasputin story was better.

Also, A Rumor in St Petersburg sounds very much like The can can.

I love Journey to the Past. The Aaliyah version though, not the film one.

This movie's alright. I watched it recently with a friend who grew up loving it, I watched Thumbelina more growing up, which on rewatch is an enjoyable disaster.
