I remember not thinking much of it, but I was 14 at the time and just looking for a dumb Robin Williams comedy. This is not that.
Same here. I remember having the same hatred for it as Roger Ebert, who labeled it the Worst Movie of 2002 way back when. It is most surely nowhere near the Worst of anything, except maybe the Worst Movie for People Who Are Looking for Characters With Redeeming Qualities.
After ten years, the movie has only gotten funnier. Writing a mean-spirited movie or show is a tightrope act. You have to make sure the material is funny enough to back it up, otherwise it just doesn't work. But it's funny. Really funny. There's something hilarious about how devious and evil Randy is while Sheldon is as wide-eyed and naive as the day is long.
Decent supporting performances from DeVito, Catherine Keener, Jon Stewart and Harvey Fierstein take a backseat to the two leads, Williams and Norton.
Not only is Ebert way wrong, but the Razzies should end permanently for nominating Williams for Worst Supporting Actor.
