Brighton Rock (2011)
Brighton RockQuote: Brighton Rock is a 2011 British film based on the novel of the same name by Graham Greene. Rowan Joffe wrote the screenplay and directed the film, which stars Sam Riley, Andrea Riseborough, Andy Serkis, John Hurt, and Helen Mirren.
The novel was previously made into a film in 1947 by the Boulting brothers under the same title. Although the novel and original film are both set in the 1930s, the 21st century adaptation takes place in Brighton and is set during the Mods and Rockers era of the 1960s.
Riley plays "Pinkie", the role originally played by Richard Attenborough. It was largely filmed in the nearby town of Eastbourne, with Eastbourne Pier standing in for Brighton Pier, and at Beachy Head. Some scenes were shot at Hedsor House in Buckinghamshire and in Brighton itself.

Re: Brighton Rock (2011)
Not as great as it could have been, but this sixties-set adaptation of the beloved Graham Greene novel is a fine, satisfying film. In his 30s, Sam Riley is a bit too old to play the teenage-gangster protagonist--his physical presence simply doesn't suggest in-over-his-head, angry adolescent so much as confident psycho--but Riley is a good and magnetic actor. The heart of the film is Andrea Riseborough, delivering a delicate and poignant performance as a mild-mannered, naive teenage waitress who knows too much and trusts the wrong people. The film's best, most memorable scene is when she urges him to record a novelty record for her. As she watches from outside the soundproof booth, smiling and sweet, he hisses into the microphone, "You want me to say I love you, but I don't. I hate you." The second best scene is when this record is played at the end. The production values are high--the atmospheric score, the noir cinematography which suggests a nostalgic nightmare--but the pacing is a tad lax, the storytelling a bit unfocused.
