Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close Quote: Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close is a 2011 American drama film adaptation of the novel of the same name by Jonathan Safran Foer, directed by Stephen Daldry and written by Eric Roth. It stars Tom Hanks, Sandra Bullock, Thomas Horn, Max von Sydow, Viola Davis, John Goodman, Jeffrey Wright, and Zoe Caldwell.
Production took place in New York City. The film had a limited release in the United States on December 25, 2011 and a wide release on January 20, 2012. Despite mixed reviews from critics, the film has been nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture and Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role for Max von Sydow.

You couldn't pay me to see this crap. Well, okay, I guess you could pay me to see this crap, but it would be expensive and I'd probably just be texting the whole time.

Max von Sydow is still alive?
John Goodman is still alive?
James Gandolfini is still acting?

Odd post. Max von Sydow is elderly, but he's remained a consistent presence in movies, including roles in The Diving Bell and the Butterfly and Shutter Island. John Goodman can currently be seen in future Best Picture winner The Artist. And James Gandolfini has supposedly been cut entirely from Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close.

Re: Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close
Saw this a few weeks ago. It's very good and I thought the 9/11 scenes were incredibly effective and well-done. Sandra Bullock, Max Von Sydow and Viola Davis are all fantastic, and Tom Hanks is very good (though he's in the movie for maybe 15 minutes max). A good deal of the dramatic tension in the film is centered around six voicemails that were left on an answering machine on 9/11 that Oskar (Thomas Horn) has never let anyone listen to, and I thought the way this played out was very successful. My biggest problem with it would be that Oskar is written in a way that he comes off as annoying and hard to sympathize with, and since Thomas Horn is in almost every scene it can get quite grating at times. Overall though, I'd definitely recommend this one. B+

Re: Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close
First off, Thomas Horn is one of the worst child actors ever. He is so monotone the entire time. I hate his character so much in the film that I really want to punch him every time. I just found it very frustrating that Oskar seemed to not care how he acted around others and din't realize when he was being an asshole to others. Also, who lets their kid just wander around New York City day in and day out constantly. It just seemed odd and the fact that Linda wouldn't stop him sometimes is questionable. The only parts that work of the film are Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock but they are in the film for such a short amount of time that at times I forgot they were even in it. Also, I didn't like how they basically made Linda the new Thomas by the end of the film. It just seemed like a complete cop out. So yeah, this film basically is not good and so... *

Re: Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close
A bit overwrought at times but I was emotionally affected by it. Thomas Horn's precociousness works in the context of the film, something I was a bit concerned about before seeing it. I think he could have an interesting career if he chooses to remain in films. Tom Hanks is good but barely in the film; Sandra Bullock has more screen time and I found her to be the film's heart: it's a relatively quiet performance pretty free of histrionics, and I wished the movie would have focused on her more than it did. Viola Davis, Jeffrey Wright and John Goodman make token appearances, while Max von Sydow's silent performance is impressive (although I was a bit underwhelmed by the backstory/development of his character). Is it one of the best movies of the year? No. But it's well-made and it leaves an emotional impact. B+

Re: Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close
I absolutely hated the kid in this movie. It almost reminds me as if they were to adapt The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, except instead of a dead dog, we have a dead father, and put it around 9/11. The Amount of Oscar bait in here would be enough to choke a whale.
I can only imagine the original author's thoughts "Ok, lets do a 9/11 book about a family dealing with mourning. No, ok we'll make it more about the son, and getting over his dad's death. We'll make the mother now a workaholic and alienate her son further. Oh oh and we'll give the son autism, and let's throw in a his mute grandfather, who he's never met before. Oh and wow, I just came up with this, the father who died in 9/11 was one of those jumpers, just think of the visual imagery people will have. Oh and his mother will end up being one of the best mothers ever, her neglect is actually what brings them closer in the end. BOOM Pulitzer!
Eric Roth's screenplay is fine, and the supporting players and basically their cameo acting scenes are all very good, but this film in the end is just pointless, frustrating, and there is really no real reason to like it outside of a solid production.
