 Händler der vier Jahreszeiten [The Merchant of Four Seasons] The Merchant of Four Seasons Quote: The Merchant of Four Seasons (German: Händler der vier Jahreszeiten) is a 1971 West German film written and directed by Rainer Werner Fassbinder, starring Hans Hirschmueller and Irm Hermann. The plot follows the life of a fruit-peddler, living in 1950s West Germany, who is driven over the edge by an uncaring society.
The title apparently derives from the phases of Hans' life whose merchandise goods are seasonally defined. The film explores issues of class prejudices, domestic violence, infidelity, family discord, depression and self-destructive behavior.

Re: Händler der vier Jahreszeiten [The Merchant of Four Seas Fassbinder's typically ironic brand of melodrama, only a bit rougher around the edges and with more annoying characters. If I was Hans, I surely would've beat my wife as well.
Not his best work, but it's fine. The ending is perfectly dark and sarcastic.
