 Re: Super
Dark as fuck, and quite hilarious to boot. If the idea of Rainn Wilson smashing people's heads in with a wrench doesn't make you laugh, then this isn't the film for you. A lot more tonally consistent than Kick-Ass, and a lot more fun too. And Ellen Page not only didn't annoy me, she actually aroused me. Her character is just normal enough to work, and still pretty fucking crazy. The ending is suitably OTT, as are the jibes at Christianity and comic books alike. The type of film that says "message? what fucking message?" - at least until the godawful epilogue, which should've been presented ironically but isn't. Oh well; the rest of the film is still great.
James Gunn needs to work more.

 Re: Super
Good, and even great at certain points, but I thought the awkward tonal shifts that occurred throughout kept this one from reaching its full potential. The final scene in particular just doesn't work at all. B

A funny and interestingly original take on the Kick-Ass idea of being a real-life superhero. It excels in its agenda to not follow conventions of Hollywood action/superhero movies, and it offers its own slice of absurd humour which makes it a pleasure to watch. Ellen Page is fantastic and strangely sexy too, and Rainn Wilson is rather odd but effective in a role that was made for him to play. Gunn uses music really well (just like in Guardians of the Galaxy) and the film successfully communicates its brand of dark humour, which is very welcome in American cinema. Let's hope it catches on.
