Essentially Zombieland crossed with The Road, it's nonetheless more original and enthralling than you'd expect from such a pairing. Though the post-apocalyptic scenario presented is nothing new, the film uses it merely as the background, foregrounding the characters and their relationships and adding a sense of gravitas to the proceedings. It's less an action picture than a drama, even though there's still quite a bit of the former. Of course, there's also enough blood and gore to go around, some appropriately dreary imagery, and a rather restrained, yet still impressive, sense of style. Plus some decent performances (including a basically unrecognizable Kelly McGills - the years have not been kind to her) and, as is common to the form, a fair amount of post-9/11 social commentary. It's not a particularly great or memorable film, but it's a solid enough genre piece.
